Wearing the tshirt of a band to the gig of the same band

Pickels25

The title says it all, i have met many people who have criticized others for wearing a shirt of a band to the same band's show. Even though I always wear a different shirt than the band i am seeing I really do not see how some get worked up over it. What do you guys think?

VoodooChild's picture

I don't see the fucking problem. When people go to an concert there's a big change they are fans of the band. And being a fan of the band also give a high change of owning merch. I never personally experience crisism about this tbh. It's quite new to me. Btw I ussualy at some point at the gig have a shirt form the band on since I like to buy bandmerch and I don't always have a bag with me, or better said never since it's fucked in the pit. And so I just wear it.

metal_thrashing_dad's picture

Personnaly i'm trying to wear a different shirt than the band i am seeing but i have no problem meeting people wearing a shirt from the band that it's playing. Of course when you go to an Iron Maiden, Metallica or Slayer show all you see is a crowd of people wearing an Iron Maiden, Metallica or Slayer shirt but...who cares what other people wear? It's their own problem!!!

VoodooChild's picture

Just curiousity now. I really don't care what I wear and eventually always end up wearing a bandshirt form the band because of buying it. But you said: 'I'm TRYING to wear a different...' Why? this is no offense or anything but I just wonder why you actually care about wich shirt you wear to a gig.

VoodooChild's picture

Mkay... Kinda understandable. But even without the same shirt we almost all got: Leatherjackets, jeans, armyboots and long hair so I don't really see the point. The information about musical taste seems understandable but just don't really see the big deal.

VoodooChild's picture

Nah didn't meant Everybody ofcourse, Nah i've seen an 70+ year old lady in an SM outfit at an Rise to Remain concert I swear. It was all emo's and her.. So not everyone is the same. But I meant the majority kinda. In the end I'm there for the band and not to judge peoples appearance.

metal_thrashing_dad's picture

@ VoodooChild: No offense at all my friend. What i'm saying is that i'm trying to wear a shirt that i really like or a shirt that maybe i haven't wear for a long time. Definitely i don't wear a shirt from a band of a different genre. I mean i don't go to a Machine Head show in a Def Leppard shirt. I will wear a Lamb of God shirt or a Slayer shirt. But in general i have a tendency not to wear a shirt from the band that is playing at the night of the gig!!!

VoodooChild's picture

Thnx for answering. ToxikTormentor explained jt in a good way already too so I understand now. It really was for gaining knowledge of something I didn't know about yet. But the internet has the hqbit of making things sound in a different context, so I made sure that was clear.

Lars248's picture

People must be really bored to care about this.

Lars248's picture

That is a logic which does not fully makes sence. What I mean is that people must be bored to care about what shirt someone is wearing at a show, and giving someone shit for it. I mean you are at a show, drink beer and headbang instead of gossiping about someones shirt. This is what I think about this subject.

VoodooChild's picture

I did see the opposite btw. When going to Machine head, one of my friends was wearing a Green Day shirt. And got alot of shit for this. Wich is just as stupid.

VoodooChild's picture

Oh and wen I attended an local core show wearing an Iron Maiden shirt, one of those cool emo's asked me if I borrowed my shirt from my grandfather. And then tried to explain me metal is dead and Deathcore is the new metal.... I enjoy quite the Deathcore band but this was too much...

g.dresche's picture

did this actually happen? jesus christ oO

VoodooChild's picture

Yeah it's sad but true...

meaningless's picture

for me: a total no go! If i woulnd like the Band, i woulnd be there at the show. Im wearing ALWAYS a shirt of a band, who dont play at the show or the festival.

I dont mind/dont care if ppl wear a shirt of the band who playes, but i would never do it.

Merciless_Death's picture

Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. If I like to wear a certain shirt on the day of the gig, I wear that shirt. It is a gig, not a fucking fashion show.

Lars248's picture

This.

Tuber's picture

I couldn't have said it better. Cheers.

Ironhead's picture

As if you would pick a band shirt to wear with your eyes closed because "it's not a fashion show".

lak89's picture

I don't have a problem with it, if I have a shirt of the band I'm going to see I'll wear it to the gig, then I'll buy a shirt at the merch stand and wear it on top to support the current tour. If I don't have a shirt of the band I'm going to see then I usually wear a band shirt of same/similar genre.

Ironhead's picture

Maybe an older shirt, for example from their previous tour is fine. Of course I wore my old, worn-out ANVIL shirt to the Anvil gig to show long-time support! But when half of the venue is sporting the new shirt bought 10mins ago it's quite ridiculous, looks like they're just trying to fit in and prove they're fans of the band.

Marci's picture

When I buy shirts at gigs I often wear them right after purchasing because I don't know where else I should put them (when I'm wearing my leather jacket I'm putting them into the pockets, of course). I rather sweat a little more during a concert than lose a shirt in the crowd

R.J.'s picture

Ironhead's picture

Quite rarely nowadays I buy shirts at gigs but when I do I
a) Make a female friend stick the shirt in their purse
b) Just have it on the barrier because I usually go to the front row (or place it on the other side and pick up after the show, maybe risky for some but I haven't had any problems)
c) Take it to the coat hanger (not if they want me to pay for the visit)
The reason I have developed these ways is because I just don't like the idea of wearing the same shirt everyone else is wearing at the show, be it some kind of hipsterish, fashion-thinking bullshit or not.

Pier's picture

I personally never wear a shirt of a band that I'm going to see.
There's a big chance there will be some others with the same shirt and I would feel like part of some promotional team or something like that.
But that's just my point of view, everyone should just wear what they feel like wearing and don't give a fuck about what other people might think of it.

Metalkiller's picture

i never wear the band im going to sees shirt!! even if i buy it there ill stuff it in my pocket until after. i mean i thing everybody knows you like the band because your at there show. so represent other metal acts while there. i try to wear local underground metal band shirts

Claudandus's picture

I personally like the sense of unity that comes when everyone is wearing the same/similar shirts.
Then again I mostly go to festivals, the chance of meeting someone with the same shirt there is almost unavoidable.

DamageIncDEB's picture

Nothing wrong with it to me. When metal alliance comes around to where I am in april, I would wear my Anthrax shirt since they're my favorite band playing, but I'll have my Exodus one on since it was a special event shirt. Either way, I see nothing wrong with it, plus I'm usually gonna get a shirt at the merch booth and put it on over my other shirt so it doesn't matter to me very much.

AbysmalWind's picture

Don't know exactly why but I've always hated it, I find it too obvious and predictable, when you're attending a , say, Iron maiden show, you know beforehand there will be a huge load of shirts from the band, so in this case I usually "stick to originality" and prefer to wear whatever other band's shirt. Just a personal "mania" I've ever had, nothing wrong with people doing the opposite ;)

Nordgreen's picture

If people care about this "issue", they do seriously have a problem.
I've never met any people with that opinion. Personally i think it's obvious if you go to a concert and you're wearing a shirt with the band who's playing that night.

DeathRipper's picture

I agree with Merciless_Death. If you happen to wear the bands shirt on the same day as the show, who gives a fuck? It's not about the fucking fashion. What's next, don't have the band's patch on your vest? Fuck off to the fashion assholes.

Hárbarðr's picture

Sometimes yes, sometimes no, no fixed rule about this issue here.

Plague's picture

To me it makes sense to wear the shirt of the band to the show, but I can also see the "douchery" side of the coin.

ManOboy's picture

ill usually wear whatever the fuck i want to.

Jimmh's picture

I understand the logic that wear different band's shirt on gigs but it's stupid to whine or criticize if someone wears Kreator's shirt in Kreator's gig because there's nothing you can do to stop it.

Cannibal Lecter's picture

Who cares? I go for the music I love. Im not there to impress anybody. Its a metal show, not fashion week

mayhempunk666's picture

for me it depends, normally its what im wearing that day. But if its a shirt i really like and i expect the show to be bat shit insane i wont wear it. I tend to wear local band shirts also if the genre corresponds to that being played at the show. Just to give em some advertising to people who might like them

IronMason's picture

I usually don't even wear a shirt. shirts are so 2009.

VoodooChild's picture

I think alot of male showattenders like your way of looking at the shirt problem :)

AbysmalWind's picture

Meh? 2009 an adjective? Je suis perdu... :O

Mental-Vortex's picture

I just wear a shirt, whether it's one from a band that will be playing or not. But who cares anyway?

gizter's picture

still i would just wear a shirt, i won't choose a special shirt to wear, any shirt would do. its also nice so find people wearing shirts of other bands that are not playing that you also like.

Breiti's picture

There's only one night a year I do this, when Maiden comes to town :D
But, if I go to any other gig, I also wear a different bands shirt!
But I definitely don't care what the other people are wearing ... I just wondered that are more people than me, thinking about such "senseless" things before they go to a gig, haha :D

WarAndPain's picture

I don't see anything wrong with wearing a shirt of a band that's playing if you're a really big fan of them. I'd much rather show how much I like the band than pretend to be cool and detached from them.
This does only hold true for a few bands that I really love. I couldn't really care less whether other people want to do the same thing or not.
My inner elitist does have something to say (justified or not) about some other concert-shirt-wearing-related things, but not this :P

VoodooChild's picture

Kinda offtopic but a thing I personally do find more cool is when bands wear bandshirts from other bands instead of theyre own. But that's just an opinion.

Ironhead's picture

So, several people claim how they wear the shirt they just happen to have on at the moment and actually putting any effort in choosing which one to wear is somehow ridiculous and people who do so are only in for the fashion...

I guess YOU have bought the band shirts only to support the bands, didn't need to look at the print or anything because that's caring about the looks, eww! Pile 'em up in the closet and after taking a shower (Wait, do you take showers? You mustn't care what other people think about your stench!) you just pick what's on the top of the pile?
Just randomly pick some jeans, it doesn't matter if your hand grabs the ones with the ass part torn open, what does it matter what other people think?! Taking the good ones would be like joining a fucking fashion show...

Sure you have hidden and/or broken every piece of mirror in the house so you couldn't accidentally see yourself and place a thought on your appearance? Some fashion whores do that, how superficial and lame.

VoodooChild's picture

Hahah this made me laugh... And not to ridicule you, but because you are as right as can be ofcourse. Everyone cares in someway what he looks like. And the people who deny it are the most superficial.

gizter's picture

i dont know who said that about fasion.
but we were talking about the shirts we'd wear to a gig, and i and some others just grab a random shirt on the day of the gig, just like every day.
i like all shirts that i have, so i can just grab a random shirt and like what i'm wearing.

and about the pants. i do randomly grab them, and some are ripped..

Plague's picture

Yeah, i guess putting effort into avoiding wearing the band ur seeing kinda is the same as intentionally wearing the band's shirt. So either way, ppl are "caring" about what they wear. In other words, not wearing the shirt to the band's show is admitting that ur "worried" about looking stupid (in other ppl's eyes). Who makes up these social rules anyway LOL

COTHRASHER's picture

it doesn't really matter because i usually buy a shirt at the show and put it over the one i have on...who cares though, nobody is there to see what you have on, they're there to see the band

DeathFuckinMetal's picture

+1

DeathFuckinMetal's picture

I agree with COTHRASHER'S comment but if i have a shirt of the band playing i'll wear it.

KazolOrajia's picture

I usually won't wear a shirt of the band I'm seeing to their concert, but I'll buy a shirt there and where it for the rest of the show.

Grimlord's picture

the best thing is, when a band member comments your shirt. Happened to me when I saw Crippled Black Phoenix and went with my vintage Journey - Escape shirt on. Before playing their Journey cover song the guitarist acknowledged my shirt :)

Daniel Sodomaniac's picture

Of fucking course you should wear the colors of the band playing that night!
Thats what it`s all about guys, when i go to a Motörhead gig i always wear a Motör shirt to show my support and to everyone else that i`m a fan of the band on that night, same with all other bands i love.
That`s my opinion, cheers boys and girls!

LeprosyWillTakeControl's picture

Why wouldnt you wear the shirt of the band your seeing? if they are one of your favorite bands why wouldnt u want to wear a shirt to their show?

vomitoxic's picture

If the band that I'm going to see isn't the headliner, I will put on their shirt to show support. Same with festivals.

But mainly I wear what I feel like, when I feel it.

I show my dedication and if someone thinks me as a poser for that, then he shall. Not my problem.

lambofgodfan00's picture

I usually wear a shirt of the band I'm going to see. I really don't see what the big deal is. Oh well.

nuclearthrasher666's picture

If I have a shirt of the band that is playing I will wear it . Outherwise I will wear a shirt that fits the gig . If I am going to a thrash metal gig I'm not going to wear my AC/DC shirt , and when I'm going to a hard/classic rock gig I'm not going to wear my Bolt Thrower shirt .

Beerfiend666's picture

Wear what you want mate fuck the glam fashion Queens These Days.

slb1995's picture

It doesn't really matter... If you saw the band on an earlier tour why not wear it to show that you've supported them for a long time?

BruteAxe2011's picture

So many "rules". LOL There are people who say you should always wear a shirt of the band you are going to see, there are others who say you should never wear the shirt of the band you are going to see. If you are in a band, there are people who say you should never wear your own band's shirt when you play. Some people say you should always wear your own band's shirt when you play.

Bottom line is - It's just like the music you listen to. If you are going to let people dictate what you listen to, then you are allowing others to think for you, and that is just wrong, in my eyes. I will always wear what I want. When I go to a concert, I do love to wear my own band's shirt, simply for self promotion. But then I will also wear the shirt of the band I am going to see. It all depends on my mood for that show.
