what do you guys think about having combinations of death, black, heavy and thrash metal patches on a vest? should you stick to one genre or is mixing wildly accepted?
i think you got to have a somewhat consistent and well thought out structure on your vest. stick to bands that have some obvious connections musically.
but what about putting a bathory patch next to an entombed patch? i have the feeling that in some peoples worlds that's sacrilege.
in my opinion bathory is such a widely influential band that you can have it on almost any vest (same goes with bands like celtic frost, venom, slayer etc..), but i know for a fact that some really nerdy black metal weirdos would beat the shit out of someone with a bathory patch next to the not so kvlt "sellout"-band entombed. same applies to a lot of situations.
judas priest and mayhem? watain and exodus? iron maiden and cannibal corpse?
i know that running your own race and and not giving a shit about what other people think is the greatest way of thinking. but this is still a very interesting issue that i would like some intelligent input on.

I just put what I like, but with my taste most of that ends up being thrash so I guess genres don't mix much
But I think since vests are unique to the person, the only thing they should reflect is that person's own taste, regardless of genre
kertalaaki on
I would say do it as you like, there are many ppl here mixing the genres from hard rock to thrash and death metal etc. I think there's no "code" and nothing weird about that. After all it's just representing those bands you like..!
And I would not number Entombed as a sellout. I think that it is bullshit that people think they have only 2 good albums, but hey that's just me and everyone has right for their opinion. :)

I tend to have a range of things on my vest. Goregrind on the same vest as dungeon ambiance. But I have it in a way that I think fits, according to the order in which I got the patches, and put them on, and the relation of the bands to each other, or lack thereof. To me, my jacket just "works".
most people just slap on everything they like.
and they sew on the patches pretty much like a patchwork quilt.
if they like it thats fine, but i personally prefer putting patches on only of a certain theme or genre.
also for me patches are as much a factor as the denim.
patches for me are a way to accentuate and decorate the denim.
R.J. on
I agree. I spent good money on my denim, so I'd like to be able to still see it as well as use the pockets and buttons. If I was gonna cover the entire thing, I would've just cut up any old jacket.
put it this way. I like Billy Idol and I like Dismember. But i'll never put patches of both next to each other, or even on the same vest. that's just weird and i dont like it.
Extremeaggression on
Judas Priest and Mayhem, thats my vest ! ;) well actually i think you should put on your vest whatever you like and dont pay attention on sub-metal-genres! i think when you have only black metal bands on your vest, why not putting a priest patch on it if you like em;)
lak89 on
Mine is definitely a mix of genres, it's pretty much an amalgamation of my tastes, so I'm perfectly comfortable putting Judas Priest next to Origin. I am however, conscious of layout and placement, I'd like my kutte to have some form of shape so it doesn't look messy. Ultimately, it's really up to you, if you like to single genre your vest then go for it.
Claudandus on
I use to mix alot(I feel a song comming here)since I have a varied taste in music. On my last vest I had Black, Death, Doom, Drone, Avant garde, psychrock and Thrash.
hammer slammer on
I put on patches of bands that I like, regardless of genre, my vest features such names as Slayer, Blind Guardian, Bloodbath, Manowar, Electric Wizard, W.A.S.P, Ghost, Immortal and I even have an Ian Dury patch and an LMFAO pin, If I like them, they go on my vest, regardless of genre. (Though I am working on a less crowded Death Metal only jacket, I just need to find another Consuming Impulse backpatch to add to it...)

I PUT ON MY KUTTE WHAT I WANT & LOVE !!!
I have some tribute vests with only one band but I mix wild because I´m not a "One genre" person, I hear many bands from different styles, so what´s wrong with mixed Kutte?
meaningless
perfectly said! Totaly agree here!
i'm waiting for someone to put a stryper patch and a mayhem patch on the same jacket...
dont let ultmetal see this...
PhantomLord666 on
Haha! Patchology seems like a legit scientific term xD
Apart from that put whatever you want on your kutte. It's supposed to be your own personalized jacket that includes what you like not anyone else :)
slb1995 on
Like most other here I just put on it what I like.
Mark on
Just do it. There are no rules except for what you feel.
ThrashLikeIts86 on
I say put on whatever the hell you want, your vest should represent your taste and if that happens to be broad then so be it.
vomitoxic on
I'd say put there anything you like. I cant 'cus I cant choose or I get pissed 'cus I dont find or I cant make some patch.
So that's why I have two "one band kutte's" and one with few patches.
Plague on
I think both ideas work...to an extent. I like a lot of black metal, so my leather kutte is dedicated mainly to that genre, but thats cuz its what i like. If someone has a mainly bm kutte, then it wouldnt make sense to me if they put on some old school hair metal band like Warrent or something. That would just look stupid even if thats what the person likes. For my denim kutte i have a bit more of a mix.... But its a mix, so there anything would fit. One school of thought is that the kutte would tell ur metal journey, so it could have varied bands that show ur musical growth. In my case, my denim kutte will show that cuz it has traditional metal bands (metallica, Pantera, slayer) that i listened to wen i got into metal, then theres some DM bands that i grew into (Deicide, hypocrisy) and of course some BM bands that i now listen to (Dark Funeral, mayhem).

The vest im currently patching up at the moment has thrash, death, hardcore / crossover, black, heavy and hard rock / glam on it. Couldn’t really give a fuck if people like it or not. My music tastes under the metal umbrella span the entire spectrum. I can easily play Deicide one minute and Stryper then next not bat an eyelid. Even today at work, CDs ill be cranking include ‘Immortal – Pure Holocaust’ and ‘David Lee Roth – Eat’em and Smile’.
BlackMetalRights on
I say put whatever you want on a vest! As long as its metal or awesome that is!
Necrosathanas on
I was thinking of doing a heavy metal or even only NWOBHM-themed vest, but I abandoned the idea. Currently on the works is a vest with my top bands, genre-wise mainly heavy metal with doom and black metal here and there.
I put anything I want on my vest. One exception is when I'm going to make a leather vest for Iron Maiden only.
devil40 on
I have a just Thrash jacket as it is my fav genre but i also have a mixed jacket that has everything from Stryper to Deicide on it and i don't think it looks odd at all as i love (with the exception of Industrial) all genres of Metal.
alski666 on
I have been always thinking that those "nerdy black metal weirdos" or whatever are just stupid little kids who are trying too much to be something what they're not.
Metal music is about expressing your own tastes and views, not anyone else's. So don't give a fuck and let those trvekvlt kiddies find out about their stupidity themselves.

The only rules ,in my opinion is:
1-only bands you listen
2-no rules beside the number :)
meaningless
all patches u like, from bands u listen.
No problem if there is a Poison-patch beside the Belphegor-patch.
Like many other said alrdy, express urself! :D
no problem... if its the german poison. ;)

hahaha ;) i was thinking about the 'others' but i was expecting some1 will come along with the 'german ones' ..hahaha..

Working on mine at the moment, in sewing process. Mine will reflect my metal journey rather than be a single-genre tribute, so it will include patches from mixed genres of the bands that meant a lot to me through the years. That's how I see a patch vest/jacket to be... a personal tapestry of one's own metal tastes/manias, not some conformity pressure to include 'influential' genre bands just because they fit thematically with chosen patches even though you're not thaaat into them. Make it your own way as long as it's your own way!
Evilution E5150 on
i think if your a actual fan of the bands it doesnt really matter which ones you place on it, althought some may look silly next to each other who really cares its your vest do what you want
Metal_James on
I got cannibal corpse, bathory, napalm death, the ramones, pink floyd, motorhead, and a Colorado Avalanche patch, on mine... if I like it, it goes on the jacket,

why this has to be even discussed

There should never be any rules in situations like this. You like what you like. However, a Stryper patch next to a Watain patch would def win the Ironic Award!
COTHRASHER on
hmm i dunno but my next vest will have punk bands on the back and thrash/death metal bands on the front. Vests should have whatever you want on there
Tico Tyrant on
I don't believe in any kind of decree or unwritten law for patch choice. My first kutte is basically a mish mash of tastes. Keeping this in mind, people also shouldn't be criticized for choosing a theme or keeping a linked idea throughout their projects. On my leather I am finishing, it's mostly black metal with a bit of black and thrash; As much as I love bands like Amon Amarth, Razor or Saxon....it doesn't really make sense in my mind, to put those bands next to something such as Mutiilation, or Drowning the Light.
I also like the idea of doing a theme such as only Motorhead, but sometimes those are a make or break kind of situation, while a single band themed jacket can look great....it can also just look goofy, sure it might show dedication.....but having 60+ patches of one band, placed randomly...doesn't necessarily= awesome...it depends on the kutte and overall affect.
Finally, I have no problem putting non band related patches on metal themed kuttes, I have a Costa Rican flag patch on my kutte, a Canada flag patch, a Pinky and the Brain patch and I'm going to put on one of my favorite hockey teams....as well as a Moosehead beer logo :D
OSDMNICHOLAS on
it doesn't matter at all...put bands on your vest that you dig. everyone likes checking out vests, everyone always has a "you really like THAT band?!" i love to see which patch that becomes hahaha
Yngwie Mangosteen on
I'm into Old School like Sabbath, early Doom, NWOBHM, Speed metal, hard rock, some Death metal and Black-Thrash. So the patches that I have show all these...
I think we should put on something that shows what we really like, something that represents our own style...
Mad Marvin on
In my opinion it doesn't matter, if you have different genres on your vest. I just put on everything i like, and I even have a Kollegah (german rapper) Pin, and I don't give a damn, what others say. Everything I like deserves to be on the Kutte, no doubts about that!
PutridStench on
I had never thought about that. On the back of the same jacket I have put patches of Electric Wizard, Anti Cimex, Bathory and Transgressor. I just put my favourite bands, but I don't blame people who keep some harmonisation: just have a look on Cunt Cauterizer's battle jackets, hehe!
Anyway, it's an interesting matter...
