My son and I at Metallica a few weeks back. It was his first gig. He had a blast. Didn't know my mate took this pic - i was fixing his ear-muffs at the time.
This is so awesome. I love it. And I love the attention to detail on the AJFA patch (stitching). Classy! And dad's got some old school kicks! DEFINITE 5 FLAMES!!
Looks like he's having fun with Metallica and Anthrax. He's got room to grow and room for more patches. He's ahead of me, that's for sure. I don't even have a jacket/vest yet. I'm still in the patch collecting stage.
Hes only 8 and i think some subjects are a little to 'heavy' for a 8 year old to listen to. He loves old Metallica (AJFA and earlier), Megadeth, Iron Maiden, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest etc ... Thats why his vest is leaning towards those bands.
Ahhh you're gonna have to do that lovely white stitching all over again! ps - I LOVE the Metallica vs Megadeth combo you two have there. A clash of the titans!
HA! The reason why the AJFA patch looks so well stitched is cos i didnt do it - im a butcher when i put my patches on. A friend of mine sewed a few of my kids patches on the vest.
Then you'll have to do it in black or get that friend to redo it when he keeps growing! That could literally turn out to be a perpetual work in progress for another decade.
Cool beans man, I hope in 8 years time I can take MY kid to his first metal show. he's just 4 months now so maybe he'll grow up quick.. I'll be sure to teach him the classics :)
I think this is a great pic! And it's cool that you an your son share that in common. My dad is ignorant and has no respect for metal nor me liking it. He just dosent get it. You seem to get it, and props for not letting your kid get too into the "heavy" subject matter too early. Honestly I think bands like Metallica can be "family friendly" I mean they arent gonna say anything you wouldent hear in a pg-13 or even pg movie. And good idea watching out for the hearing. Your a good dad!
I hear ya man ... my dad also didn't and doesn't get it. But then again, my dad has no interest in music whats so ever. I know hes still young and i do send him to a private/catholic school. Ok, i dont believe with a lot of what the religion is about but the morals is whats important to me. I think letting him listen to music like Slayer or Possessed isnt good for a mind thats still so young. I know that he doesnt understand 99% of what they are singing about but if its blatantly about satan or killing people etc - its not good for a child. Im just glad he had fun. Our next gig together will be Iron Maiden next February which both of us a psyched for. Thank you for your kind words brother \m/
i come from a muslim family, and i found metal a very young age. And i mean my dad fuckin hates the music i listne to, my mom loves some of it (priest, metallica, maiden, ext). Im glad my mom and grandma are on my side ( my grandma is so fuckin cool btw she went to motorhead with me). And im teaching my little 2 year old sister the roots. She loves it when im blastin venom or like sepultura in the car. Its not brainwashing per-say, and nor do i think any of the music is scary, but i can see where you come from by not letting your kis listne to the heavier stuff just yet.
Im sure he'll discover it in due time but just now i think hes a little too young for it. Hes seen all my Slayer, Venom etc etc etc LPs and he knows he cant listen to them and he knows about my death and black metal records also and he knows they are off limits. But he does have is own little collection happening. Hes got his own Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath etc LPs and hes happy listening to them.

Really, no kid should be pushed to some crazy religion at that age, they should make their own mind and choose what they want.
That's like me and when I have a kid!
I can understand you don't want him getting into the other stuff yet. If you aren't in your teen years it may be a little soon.
I mean, you can't jump to cannibal corpse and venom at once. You have to start off with Judas Priest, Maiden and Sabbath. Get your ears adjusted. Then move on to like Metallica, Megadeth and Motorhead. Then Carnivore, Kreator, Nuclear Assault .ect
Yeah, get that boy some white hightops man!
And a bigger vest to transfer patches to when he gets bigger!
I'm into some confusion, my house is like in a dictatorship, my mum dosn't like any of my metal shirts(especially my Pantera Vulger display of power shirt). but i would like to wear a battle jacket so it shows people that i like metal. but my dad likes motorhead, some maiden and priest. i'm not sure to get a vest and sew patches with my favorite bands on incase my mum flips. please help on how to get around.
she does, because her brother likes Metallica and Scorpians (if you count them), everyone (exept my dad) are catholics but i blast Venom's Welcome To Hell from my radio, it's just the look she dosn't like. Also my English teacher talked to me about metal because i wore my slayer shirt to one lesson, next day mu Motorhead shirt.
My mum hates the fact that half my wardrobe is black and has band logos on it. I'm making a kutte now, but I'm at uni, o god knows what she'll say when she sees it. Or when I raid her sewing kit...
She doesn't like metal much, but she loves Queen etc and doesn't mind Thunder or some Maiden like The Clairvoyant, so hopefully she'll be cool with it as I have a Queen, Thunder, Van Halen, Whitesnake etc.
Odly though, she doesn't mind my green Airbourne shirt with a naked lady on it, because it's not black.
Tricky situation Motorheadslayer, this is a good time for that father-son male bonding thing, he likes motorhead you like metallica and so on. Explain your dilemma to your dad as he's married (or in some form of a relationship) with your mum and they love each other and so on. He can then talk it over with your mum and that could open up some possibillties.
long story short, involve both your mum and your dad, as your dad understands you and your mum so he could play a big role in solving your dilemma. and of course what maddolis says is a good idea to add :)
Also i'm not the most confident person, when i brought my studded wrist band, my friends just laughed at me. Theres no metal in britain anymore, theres a lot in the States but not here.

I wish my parents were metalheads (or at least, rockers). Now, I'm 19 and there's no problem with my passion in Metal, but in my early years (when I was 14-15) they were REALLY scarred and a little dissapointed. I had to show them that the love I have to Heavy Metal Music is something that I cannot describe. Later, they saw that I was being myself, and they began to support me. Besides, my mom has helped me when I don't have enough money to buy a gig ticket (in Metallica's one she paid all the ticket even though it was in her birthday, I still have that debt with her).
You're doing well with your son, and I'm gonna say it again: I'll raise my children that way!
There's many who tried to prove that they're faster, but rhey didn't last and they died as they tried!
Thanx babe. My parents weren’t rockers or metalheads and had no passion or love for any kind of music. Luckily, I had older cousins are who got me into hard rock and metal at a very VERY early age and like yourself, that freaked my folks out. Still to this day they don’t get it but they know that there's really nothing they can do about it.
My son likes metal because he can see how much it means to me. But im sure that will all change once he begins high school and develops a passion for whatever will interest him. My ex (his mum) isn’t into metal and has other musical tastes. Even myself, I don’t only listen to metal - music is an amazing thing and you shouldn’t pigeon-hole yourself into on genre.
Cheers man. My son is 10 now but he was 8 when this was taken. So I take it you're heading to Soundwave? I’m going too. I was thinking about taking my son but I thought it might be all a bit much for him. It’s a long and hectic day. Ill take him to the Anthrax and Dragonforce (he loves them) sideshows though. I bought us tickets to see Suicidal Tendencies in December also. And last night Black Sabbath Australian tour announced so ill grab us tickets to that too. And from what ive heard, next year AC/DC (40th Anniversary), Iron Maiden and Van Halen are all touring too - 2013 is looking like a killer year for gigs.
oh yeah, heard about Sabbath will go to them if its not too much money for tickets, and ive always wanted to see the other 3 bands!. thats cool that he is into metal now and not going into the mainstream pop music.yes i am going to soundwave, went last year, but ya know, too many "new" bands. yeah, soundwave is pretty scary i thought lol. maybe in 1 or two years. anthrax one of my fav thrash, if not any bands ever!
Im estimating they'll go for $150+. Of those 3 other bands the only one i havent seen in Van Halen. I could have seen them as Van Hagar a few years back but that was never Van Halen to me so i didnt go. Sounwave was never a 'metal' festival. It was more alternative. Its only the recent years that they've added more metal acts to the festival.

oh yeah, heard about Sabbath will go to them if its not too much money for tickets, and ive always wanted to see the other 3 bands!. thats cool that he is into metal now and not going into the mainstream pop music.yes i am going to soundwave, went last year, but ya know, too many "new" bands. yeah, soundwave is pretty scary i thought lol. maybe in 1 or two years. anthrax one of my fav thrash, if not any bands ever!
