To be honest, I think I'd never wear a leather vest like this, but that's just my taste.^^ But I actually think it fits really well with URFAUSTs and the Devil's Blood "occult vintage" vibe and besides that I really like to see people with unique vests! And your paintjob with the sigil is fucking killer! Always liked the voodoo dust artwork way more than their newer sigil. Did you use a stencil for the edges or is it completely free hand?

thank you! Yeah I can imagine not everyone is into the fringes and conchos. It is a combination of both methods.

Definitely looks like you know what you're doing! Can you tell me what kind of material you use for stencils? I've always had difficulties around the edges, never really got them as smooth and clean as I wanted them.^^

I don't work with stencils a lot, but I made use of it for this particular sigil, bc. it needs to be ganz genau. I just used regular print paper as stencil. I encountered the same difficulty you had, but here is where the painting skill comes into play. I just try to paint as tight & straight as I and if I fail, then the solution lies in using multiple layers of correction. There is no absolute failing in painting, since you can always let it dry and correct/adjust the mistake. Just think about Bob Ross' phrase of happy little accidents ;) Painting artwork is like fun monk work that demands a hell lot of patience and concentration.

btw: don't worry about extremely small deviations too much. There is a somewhat balanced charm of handpainted leather that on the one hand you can see that it's done diy, yet very close to crafted perfection. If you want a 100% correct copy of the original artwork, then a high quality backpatch or silkscreen technique might be the better outcome.

Haha, I think I need to watch Bob Ross more often! :D And thanks a lot for sharing, I think my biggest problem was being too impatient, but I've gotten better.^^ And others usually just see the end result and not the time it took to get there, it's good to get reminded of that sometimes.
For me it's actually been almost 15 years since I last painted on a leather jacket. But I'm kind of getting back more into drawing/painting lately. Did you use acrylic paint?
Miss Maartje Mayhem on
No I use high quality Angelus preparing fluid, leatherpaint and finisher from leathershop.com ....I also paint several layers & finisher so that the painting lasts for years and can withstand rainy weather and flying beer. I advise you to not use regular acrylic paint for leather (you can use that for denim tho!), but just invest in leatherpaint. Acrylic paint doesn't tack that well on leather and peels off much quicker. The base for leatherpaint is acrylpaint, but with a lot of specific additives that meant for the job. It is a money investment that is definitely worth it. Angelus leatherpaint has a great viscosity and is very economic in use. It would be a shame making all these hours of dedication for a painting that peels off very fast. Have fun getting back to painting!

This is a great tribute! I like that you kept the front plain. Maybe you can add a pin of each band on the lapels, but it looks stellar as is!
