Kinda trick question. "The true" was handwritten over the logo as far back as the PFA tape in '86. Deathcrush had it, De Mysteriis and Live in Leipzig did not. It appears sporadically on some early Mayhem concert flyers, like the 1991 promoting the Jessheim show. It' like they added it when they felt like it. Ironically, eems to really become canonized after both Dead and Euronymous are no longer in the band. Dawn of Black Hearts boot from 95 had it, and after the band got active in '97 it became standard, along with the "thornier" logo (like on the Ancient Skin/Necrolust single from that year, but for some reason in 1999 they dumped it briefly, the 7" split with Zyklon B and Mediolanum Capta Est from that year both have the older version without the "true" part).
Kinda paradoxical dilemma in its usage... on one hand, it shows the deep roots in the scene, on the other hand, it shows a fresher lineup playing different kind of music while trying to remind everyone the band's got legacy. It's like the band exists as independent entity from its members in its own dark dimension.
