Yeah it is an awesome record for sure, but for me it was a bit of a sleeper album because i was so obsessed with their debut in terms of rawness and speed, but over time Blessed grew on me and now i just love it the same as Altars of Madness.
A sleeper album is that type of record you like but it will grow more on you over time, just like Blessed are the Sick and South of Heaven have been those type of records, in my case.
Aha! Okay, thank you, and that's great then. I guess that's how Blessed are the Sick was for me then too. I always used to say Gateways to Annihilation was my favorite, but then Blessed got up there too...
Haha xD and actually, I believe Altars of Madness was the first album I ever heard by them. Altars is great, don't get me wrong, but I guess I've always liked the slower, "chunkiness" of Gateways. It was probably the third or fourth album I heard by them
XD very cool that your first MA album is such a classic record, my first MA record was Covenant, another masterpiece in their discography.
Yes, GTA was some slower, heavy groove tunes, at the time my impression was that that album lacked a bit of fast songs as well, in order to be a more balanced record.
Haha the only reason why it was my first album by them is because once upon a time when I was a little, newbie metalhead, I looked up a list of the best death metal albums. Altars of Madness was up there, so I listened to it and loved it...I had to find out more about this band....
Covenant is really good too. How'd you first discover it?
Covenant was my first MA record because i had recorded on one side of a tape with Wolverine Blues by Entombed on the other side.
Since i first heard the first seconds of Rapture, i was hooked (to this day i still thing that song is one of the best DM songs ever, imo it's perfect!!), and also wanted to know more and more about them, they seemed to be a very mysterious band, with all the Necronomicon references and all.
That's such a cool way to find out about not just the album, but also the band. I almost feel like they had to be one of the original bands to use Lovecraft references...maybe to incorporate elements of Sumerian mythology too....I wonder....
It was all we had back in the day, no internet, you would get your information regarding bands through some kickass magazines that existed back then, also by talk with your friends that also liked Metal about the bands that we were trape trading and also discovering at the same time, it was awesome for sure, we were not spoiled by the all access of the internet and appreciated a lot more the few albuns we were buying, but also the merchandise and so on, good times indeed! :)
Yes Trey was very much into the Necronomincon mythos, but also like you said, the Sumerian mythology and overall the Occult, he used to cut himself up before shows way back then, etc...
Ehehehe it was a great time for sure, but it had it's handicaps too, the lack of information was one of them, but at the same time, that lack of information and access to a lot of records also made us apreciate a lot more the one's we did get to buy, or tape trade with friends in order to put them on cassette so that i could go to school listening to the newly purchased or tape traded albuns you've got, with my Hight Tops (Still love those!!), tight jeans and beeing proud of wearing that band t-shirt, that you loved so much.

Was Gateways to Annihilation your gateway album (pun intended) to Morbid Angel?

I can understand how it could seem unbalanced too
