St. Anger as an album is simply bad, but there are some cool song parts and riffs on the album nonetheless. They should make an EP by making a hand full of good songs out of the good ideas that are here and there on St. Anger.

St. Anger really wasn't all bad, at least they were trying to strip down bare bones and get the aggression back in their music again, but yes the tin can drum set Lars was banging on is painful after a while. Even though its too late to rehabilitate their image as they've been part of the mainstream far longer than they've been underground, their first 5 albums (and DM) will always be a staple of what I listen to.

St. Anger was great, IMO. The drum sound was awful though. Sounds like Lars was banging on garbage cans. I think Death Magnetic has a ton of great tracks. I would venture to say that I like it better then the last 2 Slayer albums. Metallica can play circles around just about anyone. They've always been at the head of the pack. Just compare Ride the Lightning with anything else from that era... you'll see what I mean. That said, they don't have to prove anything to anyone. Besides, whatever their doing works. Somebody keeps buying all those CDs....

Last time I saw Jon was on the last gig of their Euro tour in 04. Same as you, we hung out and had a good time. I last spoke to him when he was preparing the art and layout for the Reinkaos lp.I was not surprised about him killing himself as my mate had an email from him from around june 06 and it was obvious from his words that he was preparing for it. I know Nick a little bit, he lives not far from me..
