Wearing a Burzum shirt makes you a racist?

WEDERGANGER
Tue, 24/06/2014 - 14:30

Hi,
So i realy like Burzum the music.
But the idea's that Varg Vikernes has i really don't agree on.
So when i where a Burzum shirt becose i like the music does that allso mean that i support Varg??

Panthorder's picture

If Burzum had least at one great album i will buy shirt too.

bad_american1992's picture

Hahahahaha +1

WEDERGANGER's picture

LOL :P

Tuber's picture

Filosofem. Now go on and buy yourself a Burzum tee!

judascrust's picture

Varg does seem to have a bit of an obsession with race "purity" and explaining why he feels its important but his views are not based in hatred (at least not anymore) and none of his music was ever inspired by any racial, social, political, or religious ideology.
There's a few Burzum shirts that might catch you some flak but I don't think wearing a Burzum shirt means you identify with Varg's opinions.

gizter's picture

i think most people who listen to Burzum can agree that Varg is an idiot. but he can make some great music.

ThrashLikeIts86's picture

Yeah, Varg may be a racist idiot but it's not really something he puts in his music (at least that I've heard, admittedly not a huge Burzum fan outside Filosofem).

judascrust's picture

Varg certainly is not an idiot. He can hold a conversation and he explains himself intelligently and articulately; his ideology of race purity is simply something that most of us don't care to acknowledge as something important.

DethronedEmperor23's picture

^what he said.

PForx's picture

Yes, wearing a Burzum shirt makes you racist.
No, it obviously doesn't. It means you like Burzum's music. Just wear it and stop worrying about shit like that.

Heinz's picture

The only one I won't go out in public with is my Einsatzkommando shirt, just because it's so blatant (which is ironically the reason I had to have one, haha). The rest is fair game; I like both the metal Burzum as well as some of the ambient bedtime stuff (Hlidskjalf! :)) and still think the whole obsession wth Jews he has...well, blacks too for that matter, makes for entertaining reading but is just kind of silly in this day and age. I mean, really? Besides, early Misanthopy/Cymophane issue Burzum shirts are some of the coolest looking of their time, in my opinion.

nightslasher26's picture

Oh man,how can you ask this kind of question?I mean why do you even fucking care what would others think about your shirt. If someone look at your shirt and get offended then that person leads really boring and pointless life.Topic similiar to this was brought up here in the past a few times and I just find it shitty that metalheads go around asking:is that right?is this isn't right?I mean in music in which imagery you can find shit like pentagrams, inverted crosses, skulls and shit like that you ask if it is right to wear something different and offensive if you will, fucking srsly?

WEDERGANGER's picture

I don't give a shit what other people think about me.
Only i don't want to get called a racist by people that know the guy behind the band...
Because i where it.
But I need to say you make some good points.

SAATANANVITTU's picture

You don't have to agree with the musician's views to like them/to wear their shirts. So it doesn't make you racist, just like wearing a virgin Mary shirt doesn't make me any more religious.

J.j. Ratte's picture

R.J.'s picture

Yes, putting on a Burzum shirt casts a magic spell on you (a "black spell of destruction", if you will), transforming you into a racist lunatic. Notice here the lack of any Burzum attire on pre-prison Varg, hence the lack of any racist beliefs. Now, if you look here, you will notice quite clearly a Burzum Hvis Lyset Tar Oss long sleeve adorning the imprisoned Varg, who, coincidentally, had recently taken a liking to National Socialism. The evidence speaks for itself; steer clear of any Burzum merchandise if you wish to spare yourself from the Nazi curse. A curse cast by Hitler himself from the depths of hell.

Hárbarðr's picture

Yes! Never underestimate the persuasive power of pieces of cloth with some print on them.

Heinz's picture

That being the particular Burzum shirt everyone who collects Burzum shirts, wants. Heh!

WEDERGANGER's picture

The shirt whay you mean is the Einsatzkommando i think.
But was not talking about that one :P
Allso I think here in Holland it is Illigal to where something like that...

Tuber's picture

You're all already a bunch of metal-loving racists, wallah bisallah!! That infidel-noise insults my religion.

Heinz's picture

That religion insults my infidel-noise. And your chocolate is in my peanut butter.

DamageIncDEB's picture

If it says Burzum, it tells people you listen to Burzum. Simple as that, however an idiot may decide to think otherwise is their problem and need to open a book. No if you had a shirt that says "I <3 Varg" different story. I don't agree with that neo-nazi shit or whatever you call it, but I'm still a fan of his music under the name Burzum, thus why I buy patches, shirts, records, etc... and wear/play them.

Wrathchylde666's picture

Ironically, I think most of the people who would be offended by a Burzum shirt dont know who he is. Think about it...WE know, we re metal fans, and most of us are underground metal fans well versed in Varg lore, so to speak. The mainstream, who would hate this guy if they knew about him, have no clue. So, really, we re talking about other metal fans who are offended by Varg, or NSBM, and the like.
None of my Jewish or black friends, the people who would most be offended, would bat an eye if I were to wear a Burzum shirt around them, and that, my friends, is ironic. LOL
I think metal fans are open minded enough not to judge a t shirt. Sometimes it can be simply about the music.

ManOboy's picture

doesnt matter what you wear, its what you believe. I collect lots of nazi stuff from the second world war, doesnt mean that im a nazi.

Taikon's picture

Despite Varg's.. unsavoury ideology, there is very little of it in Burzum's work as far as I'm aware (at least concerning his early works). I don't see wearing a Burzum t-shirt to be on the same level as wearing merch from blatantly NS-oriented bands like Absurd or M8L8TH. Plus, I think Burzum is "popular" enough that most people wouldn't really care; metalheads complain about NSBM, but no one gives you shit for wearing a t-shirt from bands with dubious lyrics like Impaled Nazarene (lots of patriotism and sexism, two anti-communist songs and an anti-gay song) or Deströyer 666 ("I'm not ashamed of being white" in one of their lyrics).

If you can't be bothered reading all that, the conclusion is simple: Do whatever you want. If someone bothers you about it, tell them to fuck off or clobber them.

DevilzForce's picture

think of it like this: why would you wear something of a person that spits on you, your family and your scene? (varg has made more than one statement about the metalscene and it's fans), is a outspoken nazi and published at least an article a month in ns magazines and lives like a recluse in france armed to the teeth awaiting the ''great race war''

why would you even do that? i'll tell you.... you wanna be cool ! you wanna wear something dangerous but not get pegged in with the varg enthousiasts.... you can't have your cake and eat it too ! you either wear the shirt and accept the consequences or you don't... simple really...

Taikon's picture

That's true, but I feel that Burzum is a special case for the fact that it's a one man band, so the person and the band end up being associated as one. Black metal band War, which has a song explicitly stating that "niggers and kikes" should "stay away", has had at different periods members who were also in Dark Funeral, Abruptum and Hypocrisy, to name a few. Would it make you a racist to wear the t-shirts of those bands? They have nothing racist in their lyrics, but they clearly tolerate racists enough to have them join the band. It's the same here, except there is only one member so it ends up being the question: are you supporting Burzum or Varg? Of course, every time someone buys official merchandise, they are probably contributing to the increase of his arsenal for the "great race war". Something to keep in mind.

Heinz's picture

He won't get anything from me. I only go after the vintage stuff :)

DevilzForce's picture

well, burzum has always been varg.....

Heinz's picture

Mel Gibson managed to hold on to his career for as long. And it's been no secret what kind of anti-Semite lunatic he is.

bad_american1992's picture

Being racist makes you racist.

Nater90's picture

This is true!

If I had a Burzum shirt (need to get one) and people complained I'd just say "Each to their own I like his music"

PolishMetalHeadBanger's picture

Sooo.... wearing a Judas Priest shirt makes you gay??? Listen- if you're into Burzum and you know their stuff well and you're a fan- then go and get yourself fucking tons of their t-shirts- no one cares. Yo're listening to music- not musicians. For example- I'm right-winged (not a facist but quite strongly right-winged) and I don't mind listening to Exploited from time to time.

Hárbarðr's picture

Same here! right wing but i really like Skyclad.

g.dresche's picture

bearing in mind, as mentioned above, that bumzur = varg i do understand, why you raised the question. i believe its something one has to sort with oneself, whether he wants to support the people behind the music with their $$$ or not. i for example dont really like the fact, that the only black metal i ever happened to enjoy (post-1988) is gnatzi stuff and the merch usually looks fabulous as well. wouldnt give those turds my cash tho

Taikon's picture

Hahah. Indeed, it's frustrating how good bands like Absurd and GBK are. But what about guilt by association? This is something I've always wondered. Behexen aren't NS but they've released a split with Satanic Warmaster. Would you buy any of their merch? Not to mention bands like Horna who seem to have strong nationalist leanings but are not necessarily going "14/88" all over the place.

g.dresche's picture

fair point. in the end it depends on what kind of person you are, how you dress up generally and what you think and what you express. what i always picture to be funny is, when punks, as black metal is the latest trend in punk and vice versa, wear mayhem merch for example. if possible the longsleeve that uses the waffen ss skull and other references to gnatzism altogether. but then again: those fellas usually know who they are and cant seem to give a fuck about the massive political correctness wave ravaging at the moment. then again; not supporting varg because he is obviously retarded isnt really an act of political correctness either. tough topic if you want it to be :)

Morbid_Welshman's picture

I wear my Burzum patch on my jacket with pride because I enjoy the music; I have no strong feelings about belief one way or the other!

That would be like throwing away my Slayer shirts because Tom's a Christian; Who really cares?!

Taikon's picture

Didn't some people stop listening to Gorgoroth after Gaahl came out of the closet?

Johnny-Eyeball's picture

I wear Cynic shirts, doesn't mean I suddenly love cock.

I don't really give a shit what Varg's views are. He's welcome to think what he likes, whether I agree or not. I like his music. I like to show that I support his music. So I do. That's all there is to it. Guilty by association really doesn't work here.
