fuck , I have a discusion with a friend, he insist that Pantera is a fucking poser band, I like Pantera, sound hard to me, got good material, and well.... wath do you think, poser or not?
NO! NOT AT ALL! If the only songs you listen to are walk, and cowboys from hell, well thats your own thing... But PANTERA?!?!? There fuckin metal man, they were the resurgence of metal in the 90's! (btw i love walk and cowboys from hell, no offence to the songs)
haha, yeah fuck my friend, I like fucking Pantera, I'm not a motherfucker poser, and I still going to hear Vulgar display of power, Beyond Driven, Power Metal, the great southerm trendkill and ofcourse Cowboys from Hell.
I mean, cum on, even Evile make a cover of Cemetery Gates, Pantera is sick!!!
I wouldn't go as far as saying poser band because the majority of metal heads when they first get into metal start off with them, just like Slayer, Metallica, Anthrax, etc ... While some dig deeper into discovering new bands and new genres in metal many notice that, well, no offence or anything, Pantera simply isn't all that great and are extremely generic, not to mention completely rip off Exhorder. I don't care much for Pantera, I was into them when I first got into metal and liked them through my early teens but I discovered there are countless other bands that are far better.
Oh god, not the "rips off exhorder" crap... If anything, a lot of bands have copied Pantera since they came out. The sound has become generic due to overuse but Pantera was fresh as hell back in the day.
The heaviness of a band doesn't have anything to do with whether they're poser or not.
I don't care for Pantera (though I do like 3 or so of their songs), but they're definitely not posers, though they may have influenced many poseuresque bands.
Pantera changed the metal world and never ripped off Exhorder... Exhorder even says so. They played glammy stuff in the early days, but even that was pretty damn heavy and had alot of van halen/ ozzy osbourne with randy influence in it... because that's all they knew.. but when they heard bands like metallica and slayer, they got into that style and got metal. they were never posers, they just wanted to rock, man. And poser bands don't tour with bands like Slayer, Morbid Angel, or Sepultera. They HATED posers. "fuck what's hip!" was one of Dime's many quotes. so tell your friend to shove it up his stupid ass.
i know i know ... typical pantera fan, right? but come on, man that's a good band and they jammed and ripped and waved the flag in everyone's faces, when other were scared to call themselves "heavy metal" i appreciate this band. and i don't think they're generic, because they were the first to do alot of stuff. but, i DO think they influenced some bands that are very generic (be it Korn or whatever have you..) I think they ripped ass harder than anyone ever has.. and maybe ever will. and there's not a damn person who can match their skill... im workin on it, but haha probably won't happen.
I don't give a shit, I just want to know what people from this site think, if all the people say that yeah is a poser band, I don't care, I still continue hearing Pantera
This is a good question. Their old glam shit sucked. To be honest, the only reason I can stand half their material is because it's nostolgic (typo?) to me. They were one of the first metal bands I've listened to. Though groove metal, their genre, is a poser genre so I think it's possible. My two cents
How is thrash metal with a hint of Sabbath poser? I would imagine it more poser to do the constant 90-miles an hour shit like everyone else was, and to say all the fictitious, violent, gorey, morbid stuff every other band was saying, they instead spoke of relevant shit and issues we all face.
haha yeah dude
judging from your collection you are just getting into metal and you think you can tell me i suck, go listen to pantera then instead of being enlightened.
first, wow you're twenty! no offense man but you really look like a kid atleast in your uploaded pic. anyways when did I ever say it is about how much stuff you have? never! I myself have few shirts for example but its because I rather buy LP's or CD's etc.. and sure you don't NEED merch to be a metalhead, but it's very odd if you do. Maybe more of a casual listener.
anyways I judged you on your collection that doesn't make me a poser. It is just like looking at someones kutte and seeing what type of music they like, because a metalhead's collection is a very personal representation at least in my eyes, and I am sure most would agree.
"judging from your collection you are just getting into metal and you think you can tell me i suck, go listen to pantera then instead of being enlightened."
For everyone wondering what makes someone a poser or not, look no further than this comment here. Judging someone as a metalhead based on their collection of merchandise is as poser as you can get.
I agree very much with your statement. That is definitely poseurdom. People trying to make themselves look more metal by telling someone else they are not metal enough. That guy may have gotten into metal recently for all I know, but he seems to know the spirit better than terroristic blah blah. It's such a lame move to try and devalue someone's opinion based on you having listened to metal longer.
A million and one bands arent original and resemble other bands especially bands that came out in the same scene or area as them. In the case of Pantera, yes they sound like Exhorder but who gives a flying fuck, they are both good bands and were around the same time and area.
I'll just point this out, Pantera was a band that my mom and her glam friends listened to. Then when they adopted their new style, they pretty much acted like those glam albums didn't exist and they've always been all about being "tough." Seems like a poser move to deny where you came from just because it was no longer "cool."
Just my perspective, I don't really listen to them anyways, so I don't know.
if yoou knew more about them, you'd know they never pretended like it didn't happen. they'd still listen to their glam shit bro, they didn't give a fuck.
I really dislike Pantera, mainly because they become a trend where i am at, not much as hate their music, because i live in Texas and the whole "If you don't listen to Pantera, you ain't a true metalhead" Texan thing and just about every kiddie at my school listens to them, annoying as hell.
Not at all!!! The Art of Shredding, it is godlike!! P.s: Walk ain't suck, it's awesome. But poser who don't know metal can only listen to Walk (if you know what I mean by that)
exactly! every people at my school only knows that song, shit if you are lucky you might come across someone who knows cowboys from hell but thats about it.
agggggg this theme really has been brougth up a lot lately, all the ´megasuper true metal heads´ think is a poser band. pantera was one of the bands that got me into metal, and mainly couse its a great fucking band. i loved their music when i was in middle school, and i love it now, even more i love hearing covers in small house gigs. I really hate these dushebags dickheads who dis on other metal bands just to encourage their fucking ego making them feel more true or some shit. if you dont like a band well good for you man. dont figth your own metal brothers. the only poser thing about pantera is something aready mentiond, that every trendy ass motherfucker listens to walk and they are all like ´´ooo look at me i like metal i need atencion i wanna be rough´´......
Pantera kicks my ass.

Not to mention they played on Spongebob, and when I realized that, I choked on a sandwich I was eating. XD

Seems to me some people here think that because they influenced a ton of shitty poser bands, this makes them poser. This makes no sense, most of the metal sub-genres have been bastardised by shitty poser bands at some point, its just that groove metal as a whole was mostly taken in a shitty direction after Pantera.
Also I don't see how playing glam, then discovering more metal, and having that greatly influence your sound is poser. Also the album Power metal kicked arse.
I've always loved Pantera, so naturally, I don't think they were a poser band. :D
On a separate note, I've noticed that everyone calls Pantera "groove metal". Frankly, I don't know what that means.
I would consider them southern metal simply because of their attitude.
Anyone have anything to add to that?
Groove metal is meant in the sense that they have a certain groove-like sound in the song. I guess you could say that some of the riffs, coupled with the bends Dimebag does, and distortion...is groove-like. Hence, some people called it Groove Metal and the term has stuck around.
It's been said that Pantera dubbed the sound on "Cowboys From Hell" as 'Power Groove'. Lamb of God has also been called this, along with Soulfly and some others.
Pantera isn't poser at all. They are straight-up, awesome, no-holds-barred metal.
Even though I replyed to the "Groove Metal" question, I call them Metal, Southern Metal, or Groove Metal...because I can kind of sense a deep groove feel in some songs.
Changing from genre to another because the other is not selling enough is a pretty shitty poser move to do!
I still like their first three albums with Phil Anselmo very much.

Pantera is a band which many posers like. However that does not make you a poser to like Pantera. Just like how liking Judas Priest doesnt make you a homosexual.

I've seen 3 posts in the past week about "poseur" or "false metal" or "poser"....elitism in metal is natural, but only to a certain point before the focus transcends absurdity. For fucks sake, if you don't like something, move on. If you have an issue with people calling a band you like "poser" take it up with that person or at least make a better effort to effectively and logically refute something on musical grounds. I'd say it's more accurate to perhaps use language like "overrated" or maybe some phrase such as "musically devoid of creativity"....
....but when all we can think of to do, with whatever band it may be that is bothering us, is go" is this band false metal?, is this band faggy?, is this band poser?, is this band emo?, is this band not kvlt enough?, is this band not true?" etc etc etc, we sound like a bunch of knuckle dragging morons.......not to say that everyone is,even I myself get lazy with my comments, but holy crap....get over it, some bands simply don't appeal to others and some bands just are never going to fall into the metal world without a little bit of controversy......isn't that kind of expected among a group of strong minded individuals?
Whatever, I lost my focus.......maybe I'm just crazier than I thought.
