Awesome! I saw them on that tour too. It was in a bigger club and there couldn't have been 30 people there. They still put on an amazing show. Best black metal band I have ever seen live.
Was Corvus totally drunk and fucked up and incoherent and punching the pig heads and grabbing audience members by the hair? That's how I saw him and I bet that's how the early black metal shows used to be - subversive and dangerous and no one feeling self-conscious about any of it, shit was just happening. I can't believe he's no longer in Horna! They better find someone else who's just as mad.
I have it on pretty good authority that Spellgoth is a fitting replacement, but still, he's no Corvus. The band was clearly not impressed with the turnout, and the tour in general (I guess the booking agent booked them in some pretty dumb spots and low attendance was the rule rather than the exception.) Still, they ripped it. Corvus was really intense, yet somehow came off as... jolly? I dunno. He seemed like he was really having fun while the rest of the band looked like they wanted to kick our teeth in.
The Detroit crowd was thin, but made it a point to lose their minds and the band got really into the energy before too long. They even played a couple of encore songs. We learned that some of the guys that showed up came from like West Virginia and stuff. They drove like 6 hours on a Monday night for that show.
And then people wonder why quality underground bands don't ever tour the states... stateside metal bookers/organizers seem to have a talent for underwhelming results (not even mentioning Milwaukee Metalfest/Heathen Crusade going down the drain, as well as losing metal footholds in concert venues that have become hipsterized beyond recovery).
Yeah, Horna's palpable live misanthropy is no gimmick... I've seen pics from that tour of them playing on some big-ass stages with fancy lighting rigs and shit, way too much for something as stripped down as their music. Stageless dive bars may be tiny, but they make a good setting for the band, at least they get packed beyond capacity even if the crowd is not that large, and that does make a difference in the vibe. 6 hours, shit... that's dedication. The crowd size should have been double that at least, had the tour been properly advertised.
Yeah, shit happens though. Just last week, Marduk came through. I'll bet a dollar there weren't 15 people paid through the door. I didn't see more than 40 people there and there were at least 5 opening bands counting Aura Noir. Thing was, we knew about the show since it was announced in February or something. Aside from the "flyer" the club put on it's website though, there was exactly ZERO promotion locally. I'll bet more people in Sweden knew about the show than people in Detroit.
