Actually not really metal related, but which genres and bands are you guys into that are not metal?
Couple of genres I like:
Electronic:
- industrial (Coil)
- dungeon synth
- terror(core), preferred genre for working out
Other:
- jazz (bebop, hardbop, free)
- neofolk
- classical music (including medieval and renaissance)
- oldies (rockabilly, soul, 60s pop, when I’m in the mood)
if you like coil, you probably also like scorn, whine, bill laswell, eraldo bernocchi, johnny violent, FSOL, aphex twin, the berzerker, that kind of thing? and of course godflesh, which kinda qualifies as metal :)
Godflesh is fantastic for sure! Of all the other bands I’m only familiar with Aphex Twin, but they’re not exactly my cuppa tea. Will check those others out, thanks!
Coincidence or not, I've been giving Coil's Unnatural History II several spins lately. The unreleased Hellraiser theme is in a league of its own. Coil aside, here go my two cents:
-Dead Can Dance: my favourite band EVER. Similar bands I'd recommend: Arcana, Elend, Daemonia Nymphe, Dargaard, and Die Verbannten Kinder Evas.
-Pretty much everything under the Cold Meat Industry's imprint and labels alike: Brighter Death Now, Desiderii Marginis, Raison d'être, In Slaughter Natives, Deutsch Nepal, Kammarheit, Genocide Organ, Anenzephalia... Later on, Trepaneringsritualen, Kollaps, Treha Sektori, Reptile Womb, etc. etc.
I also have a fondness for the more extreme branches of punk (namely hardcore punk and crust punk, with bands such as Wolfpack, Warcollapse, Skitsystem, Totalitär, Arms Race, Violent Reaction, Consume, Battle Ruins, Sheer Terror, Judge, The Exploited)...
Last but not least, I feel like mentioning neofolk since it's one of those genres that always livens me up whenever the chips are down: Sangre de Muérdago, Ulvesang, Wolcensmen, Death In June, Of The Wand and The Moon, Ordo Rosarius Equilibrio, The moon lay hidden beneath a cloud...
I could drag this post out for ages but that's enough... for now
I also love NYHC. I went to a Sheer Terror gig a couple of weeks ago and it was a fantastic experience to see them play live.
But as far as I’m concerned, bands like Cro Mags or Agnostic Front (which I’ve also seen play live) are not really punk. Even hardcore punk is not really punk. NYHC fits will within the TSS framework.
Cold Meat and neofolk were “popular” when I was a teenager. I still like to listen to these groups every now and then.
Coil is the best of the lot because their music entails much more than the songs themselves. Their music is very conceptual and profound. I wish John was still alive and I could see them play live.
To each his own I guess, but, while I really don't feel like getting into a "genre quarrel", so to speak, hardcore punk is of course punk, just like death metal is metal. The term was coined over fourty years for a reason, and it essentially refers to a revved up, more aggressive branch of punk. Discharge, The Exploited or The Varukers are great examples of this.
P.d. sorry for the late reply, I missed out on yours!
outside of heavy metal, i listen to a lot of regional mexican music (mostly about narco related stories since they tell real stories about real people).
bachata (dominican republic music)
country music (johnny cash etc)
typically anything that comes on the radio, if it’s good; i’ll leave it on. i don’t discriminate music & i like anything. my old coworker listened to polish polka & i thought it was really sweet.
growing up, i didn’t like 80s pop, as the years go on. i’ve been more fond of it.
anything & everything at this point lol.
I grew up on Motown in the late sixties. And then soul. My older cousins were the ones who listened to rock. And my aunt was playing Paranoid June 1973 and been a Black Sabbath fan ever since.
I am now at a point, where it would be much quicker to list those genres, I do not listen to.
Whereas I used to be regressive to the bone in the past, basically being a proud Heavy Metal reactionary, I reluctantly dare to say, I became... "tolerant"
So the few things, that make my ears bleed, are most of American Rap (with a few exceptions like Vinnie Paz/Army of the pharaos/Jedi Mind Tricks or some DMX), everything in the "R&B" genre and 99% of soulless modern pop music. Most jazz gives me cancer as well as the majority of techno. But even there I found a few exceptions, mainly in the Deep Techno area. Nu Metal/Crossover/Indie is also crap in almost all cases.
So, what remains, besides stainless steel:
Of course Hard Rock, Classic Rock, Psychedelic, Heavy Psych, Southern Rock, ....
Neofolk
Martial Industrial
Power Electronics/Post-Industrial (very mood-dependant)
80s Pop
Wave/Postpunk
Synthwave
"Dungeon Synth"
Berlin School
Very little carefully selected Punk/Crust like Puke, Totalitär, Anticimex, Amebix, Black uniforms,... It's getting more and more though
Recently tons of Hardcore, mostly new school like Merauder, Kickback, Judge and a shitload of bands I cannot recall right now
Oi
Quite a bit of German rap
....
I don't care anymore these days.
What I still don't tolerate, though, is Rap in my Metal (Ice-T being the exception).
"Adding rap to Metal, is like taking the most beautiful woman in the world and attaching a penis to her" (J. DeMaio)
We don't like this.
My non-metal music taste has been strange recently.
Since I was a kid, I've always been a fan of Synthpop, New Wave, and Euro Pop / Dance music since my parents grew up with those genres, too. Some of my favourite bands from those genres include: Army of Lovers, Dead or Alive, Erasure, Pet Shop Boys, Toyah, Oingo Boingo, Nina Hagen, B-52's, Information Society, Deee-Lite, Raffaella Carrà, Zdzisława Sośnicka, Martha and the Muffins, Spoons, and so many more that I don't think I can list here since we would have to be here all day for that.
Since last year though, I have acquired a taste for French music (And I don't just mean 'Chanson Française', but I mean any artist of any genre singing in the French language). I find it strange because I'm 0% French and I used to hate learning French in my old Canadian elementary school. However, I guess something in me changed when I grew up because some of these French bands and singers are my absolute favourites now. With that being said, some of my favourite Francophone artists include: Billy Ze Kick, Matthieu (-M-) Chedid, Niagara, Mikado, Mylène Farmer, Les Rita Mitsouko, Marcel et Son Orchestre, Richard Gotainer, Ludwig von 88, Les VRP, Le Grand Orchestre du Splendid, and a bunch of other similar artists that I can't remember off the top of my head.
I like a lot of edm, industrial, gothic rock, death rock, jazz, classical, dark wave, cold wave, dark electro, new wave, dark synth, techno, grunge, 1930s+1940s
I love some good electronic music. Daft Punk would be my favorite band but i've heard some other artist i liked like Justice, Mr. Oizo, and Air. I also love comedy music. Tenacious D and Weird Al are my favorites. Running With Scissors is an amazing album! I also love classic rock like Aerosmith, Queen, and Led Zeppelin. Punk is another genre I love. Ramones, Green day, and Blink-182 are great but the Misfits are the best. I'm also really into movie soundtracks like Predator, Commando, Guardians of the Galaxy, and the soundtracks from the old Godzilla movies are all amazing.
Aside from metal, I like very much artists/bands like Enya, Enigma, Era, Vangelis, Moby, M83, Susanne Sundfor, Stellardone, Abakus, Broods, Delerium, Haelos, Lights & Motion, Mflex, Mike Oldfield, Michael Flatley, Moonwatcher, Neutralize, Nina Boldt, Orbital, Orjan Nilsen, Oxygene, Sonic Adventure Project, Stonebridge, Tripswitch, U96, Underworld... and many others like them. I don't know for sure what genre each and every one of them are exactly, but it's certainly not metal, and I would say most of these artists practice some musical style which revolves around genres like new wave, synth wave, ambiental and electronica.
And of course, Depeche Mode too!
When it comes to softer rock I like very much Guns N' Roses, Motley Crue, Aerosmith, Rod Stewart, Roxette, ZZ Top, Bryan Adams, Europe, Def Leppard, Skid Row, Bad English, Warrant, Steelheart, Poison, Firehouse, Vixen, Lita Ford, Doro Pesch, Yes, Heart, Toto, Dire Straits, Pink Floyd, Nelson... and who knows how many others....
Artists, songs and genres which are not metal but I love a lot are... countless!
I’ve always been pretty open minded but can’t sit through radio music or modern rap. The “ratchetness” is ridiculous, haha.
But I love Dungeon synth, classical, medieval/renaissance ,
electronic synth wave, 80s new wave, neo classical dark wave, outlaw country(some) and lots of ambient instrumental music. :)
Just an observation : Ι find it kind of funny when someone is mentioning hardcore punk/crust as genres that they like other than metal. Especially if its in a contex like " I dont only listen to metal, I like other thing aswell". I mean come on, this is as close to metal music as it can get !
