Tome - Demo MMXII tattoo.

LaUlvenDrepe
Mon, 21/01/2013 - 23:51

I know a lot of you are going to try to give me a lot of shit for this one because the band is practically brand new :/

I was fully aware of that while getting the tattoo, but I'm not the kind of person who regrets tattoos further down the future. The way I see it, my taste in both music and art will always be evolving (in which direction I can't say), so even if one day I don't like a particular artist that I have tattooed on my skin, it will serve as a memory of who I was at the time, reminding me to never forget "where I come from" so to speak. Some tattoos I have are more meaningful than others, but I loved the design on this demo and I really loved the demo itself, so... yep!

This band is from Ireland and they play incredible doom metal with harsh-like vocals. You can buy the demo from Into the Void records.

I just got this today!

That must be one life-changing demo

Haha, I'm not sure about "life-changing" but I certainly found it to be incredible myself. It's got perfect atmosphere with awesome music to match.

Like I said, if one day I don't like them anymore then it would still serve a purpose (and I think it also looks pretty cool, considering how simple of a design it is).

Ironhead's picture

Actually I spent several years not listening to my once-a-favorite band at all and just recently bought back the good records and went to see a show... The love towards the music doesn't seem to die, rather hibernate, so I don't think I will be regretting my band tattoos in the future as long as I have them placed carefully and joined.

By the way, I think that as a tattoo this artwork could use some shades and shadows (or how the hell to call them properly).

LaUlvenDrepe's picture

Yeah I thought about the shading, but I wanted it to be as close to the original artwork as possible without it being in color. For now, I think it looks good enough though...

What was that "once-a-favorite" band by the way? If you don't mind me asking.

Ironhead's picture

Cradle of Filth, which I discovered as a kid but eventually forgot them when I started getting into their predecessors like Sabbat (UK), Bathory, Death SS, Master's Hammer, Mayhem etc... Now I hear a lot of influences but still there's almost the same magic beneath.

LaUlvenDrepe's picture

Ahhh, I see.

I used to love that band too when I was growing up. I don't like their new stuff, but every once in a while I listen to their old material. My favorite of their albums is Dusk and Her Embrace. That thing is a masterpiece.

VoodooChild's picture

+666 on Dusk and her Embrace.... I can expect alot of hate for this but that album got me into black Metal. I now can hear the difference between Cradle Of Filth and Black Metal but in the days I couldn't it was that band that got me into the genre. CoF was the gatewaydrug too all the real shit.

boxxybabee's picture

looks well done as far as I can see from these decent quality pictures. I definitely would add some shadow to the hands and the skull even if it ain't on the Demo cover. without it looks a bit like an undone old school tattoo piece without colour because of the big outlines :P. Well but that's just personal taste I guess..

boxxybabee's picture

oh I see.. This was mentioned before :P

Blüdrayne's picture

if its that good to get tattooed, i should check it out.

1
meaningless's picture

ok, here my 2 cent dude:
Ill tell u that for some1 who dont know the band or the demo - it dont looks like a tattoo from a BAND. it could be something else. A skull, some black stuff around etc..

i woulnd not worry alot about it, what others say. i dont see a written bandlogo there or something :)

5
LaUlvenDrepe's picture

Well actually that circular thing above it is their logo. Regardless, I don't really mind what others say man... I just wanted to share the tattoo with fellow metalheads because even though as you said it could pass for a non-band tattoo, it is in fact a band tattoo, haha.

I just wanted to see what you all thought is all.

VoodooChild's picture

Cool looking tattoo. And a nice Band indeed. But the artwork is nicely done indeed.

5
LaUlvenDrepe's picture

Thanks man!

This has nothing to do with why I got the tattoo, but the artwork always reminded me of the Legacy of Kain games. More specifically, Soul Reaver 2, haha. It just always made me think of the walls inside the castles and that artwork. Strange...

VoodooChild's picture

Never heard of that game...

5
LaUlvenDrepe's picture

Mmhm... Maybe that's because you are considerably younger than I am (no offense meant, of course). I don't remember why but they stopped making both Legacy of Kain franchises right when the story line was set to be completed. Like a "fuck you!" to all of the fans. It had two series, the "Blood Omen" games and the "Soul Reaver" games. Both story lines intertwined and had to do with each other, but were set in different time frames. It was a very interesting story, and it was about vampires.

I think I read somewhere that they might be remade by Square... although I'm not too excited about that idea because A) I don't really play video games anymore, and B) they might make the characters look fruity, instead of how ugly they looked.

VoodooChild's picture

Ofcourse no offense taken. Age is one of the vew things an Human can't do shit about. I think there are only two... Never mind. It sounds cool. And yeah, remakes don't come out good always... Like Duke nukem. Or maybe abit too late (don't know when you stopped playing videogames) for you to have played but Devil May Cry. Not a remake of a game but of the storyline kinda... Meh... Game definitly sounds interesting. And again nice tattoo!

5
VoodooChild's picture

OH just had a look at the series artwork, screenshots and stuff and read what it was... And definitly wanna play that man... Dark fantasy/gothic themed world actionadventure is my favourite!

5
LaUlvenDrepe's picture

Well if dark and gothic is what you like then I cannot recommend those games enough man! I'm sure you'll love them.

I stopped playing video games when I was 17 (and I'm 24 now). The Devil May Cry stuff was around then I believe, but I never played them. I remember playing a lot of Grand Theft Auto, Diablo one and two, Starcraft, Warcraft two and three, Morrowind, and some other stuff I can't remember. I wish I could get back into video games, but for some reason when I try I always start them with a lot of enthusiasm and end up stopping like two weeks later, haha. I just lose interest and stop. I did finish all of the Legacy of Kain games though, with the exception of the first Blood Omen game.

VoodooChild's picture

Cool. I buy alot at Steam so I will definitly have a look. Morrowind is great indeed I have played them all including the first two: Arena and Daggerfall. Every 'Elitist' (you got as much bad Elitists scum who call other posers in gameculture as in every other... Fucking ridicilous) gamer wouldn't even spit on those games but they are nice. Though Oblivion is my favourite. Skyrim is nice too but Oblivion and Morrowind were both better then Skyrim.

5
LaUlvenDrepe's picture

I haven't played Skyrim, but I loved Morrowind and Oblivion. Oblivion came out after I stopped playing, but I did force myself to play it for a small amount of time (like a month and a half) and I loved it.

Morrowind holds a lot of memories for me from my adolescence. Also, both games have AWESOME soundtracks man! Jeremy Soule is a great composer.

VoodooChild's picture

Definitly, and both are alot better then that of Skyrim... Though that one might have been not so bad if it wasn't made into a stupide meme... Might be the reason I got sick of it.

5
LaUlvenDrepe's picture

I know what you mean about the elitist mentality man, all too well. It's just humanity as it is. There isn't a single topic that we wouldn't as a whole argue about. For example, iPhones vs anything else. That is such a STUPID debate and such a moronic and materialistic thing to argue about. It's just pathetic. But if iPhones didn't exist I'm sure there would be a substitute topic to argue about to replace it.

VoodooChild's picture

I'm watching this site on an iPhone now lol. NAh I know what you mean. I said because I just realised it's just like metal. things like: everybody plays that so you can't play it... that game is so commercial all about money not for the GAMERS... No one place that you should play.... instead... I mean it's almost the same as music. And in both cases I'm more like: I like it, I buy it. That's it. Just personal taste lol.

5
LaUlvenDrepe's picture

EXACTLY. That's my way of thinking. If I like it, that's all I need. I separate my tastes from everybody else's.

LaUlvenDrepe's picture

I just found out that you can buy most of the Legacy of Kain games on this one site called steampowered or something like that for $9.99 each! They have both Soul Reaver games and "Defiance."

NISSE666's picture

I would never give anyone shit because of their choice of tattoos,
It´s cool looking man!

5
LaUlvenDrepe's picture

Awesome that you like it man, many thanks!

LifeOfDeath's picture

I just checked out this demo. Great Doom metal! Very bleak atmosphere. Beautiful tattoo also! The logo of the band is very original.

5
LaUlvenDrepe's picture

Haha, what a coincidence that I was actually listening to them when I got your comment.

Anyway thanks dude, I'm happy with this tattoo. I have to majorly agree with you on the band as well. They have a really cold and bleak atmosphere, I especially like the harsh-like vocals. As far as the logo is concerned, I think it's pretty original that it's circular and I like the layout of the letters.

There is a scream at around the 3:18 or so mark of the song Void Cantation that gives me chills every damn time! haha.

I ordered a shirt and the physical demo (even though I'm not too fond of tapes to be honest) from Into the Void Records a long time ago, unfortunately they haven't shipped out my order yet because I also ordered the Sodb demo on vinyl (which is a pre-order), so yeah I have to wait for that to get to them before anything is shipped. I can't wait to be honest.

You should definitely check out Sodb if you haven't already done so. Their demo is one of the best black metal demos I have EVER heard man, and definitely the best one out of 2012 if you ask me. They have a lot of variety to their songwriting. A female bassist who is technical with her playing and really brings some of their songs to dominating life, and also more expected of black metal songwriting with beautiful tremolo riffs and such. It's an extremely intense listening experience.

I was too late to get one of their shirts and now I am going crazy trying to find one. Into the Void only has size S left, and that's just too damn small for me :(

I messaged the drummer but still no response.

LifeOfDeath's picture

Thanks for the recommendation! I am listening to the songs I found from youtube right now.

Is the Tome demo still available anywhere?

5
LaUlvenDrepe's picture

No problem dude, I'm sure you're going to like Sodb.

It looks like they're sold out by now. They still have the shirts but not the demo itself. If you want though, you can legally download it on the band's bandcamp site, it's there in it's entirety.

LifeOfDeath's picture

Damn Sodb really does kick ass! I wonder why I have never heard of them before.

5
LaUlvenDrepe's picture

Haha, well they are new and pretty obscure. In fact, I don't even remember how I heard of either of those two bands, hahaha.

That happens to me all the time.

LifeOfDeath's picture

I follow Nuclear War Now! forum pretty closely and usually people there are well aware of the great new underground bm bands.

5
LaUlvenDrepe's picture

Ahh, I see.

Maybe that's how I heard of them, I don't know. Seriously I don't have a clue, I have terrible memory, hehe.

LifeOfDeath's picture

I've not seen anyone ever mentioning this band in NWN! That's what I meant by saying that :D

I downloaded the Tome demo btw. Thanks for the tip!

5
LaUlvenDrepe's picture

No problem dude! Glad I could help.

LifeOfDeath's picture

Sorry about spamming your comment space, but I'm actually thinking about getting a band related tattoo also. It wouldn't be any logo or even a cover art but some artwork in the album booklet done by one of the band members.

5
LaUlvenDrepe's picture

Don't worry about it man, it's a good conversation, haha.

Which artwork are you thinking about getting inked?

I have several band tattoos that I want done but something always happens or gets in the way in terms of money. That, and I'm always undecided on which one to get next.

LifeOfDeath's picture

I was thinking about getting one of the creations of Tyko Saarikko. You know the neofolk band Tenhi right? There is some very dark visual art made by Tyko in Folk Aesthetic compilation booklet.

I haven't found any of those pictures from the internet so you'd have to own the compilation to know what I'm talking about.

5
LaUlvenDrepe's picture

That actually sounds very interesting. I wish I could actually see it, though I'm sure it will be great either way.

Unfortunately the only neofolk music I have is that Whom the Moon A Nightsong Sings compilation. I need to get more in the future.

LifeOfDeath's picture

Well then you have heard Tenhi. Kausienranta is an amazing song IMO!

I consider Tehni to be my favourite band at the moment. There really isn't many bands that can invoke such strong emotions within me. Their lyrics and their music are top-notch.

5
LaUlvenDrepe's picture

Yes I have definitely heard them, I just don't own any of their own personal works other than what is on that compilation album. I have to agree though Kausienranta really is amazing. It's my second favorite on that album behind that one Dornenreich song I told you about.

If it's one of your favorite bands though I certainly have to dig a little deeper within their circle. Is all of their work neofolk? That would be awesome.

LifeOfDeath's picture

Yes all of it is neofolk, although their style varies a bit. They have one song that is actually quite black metallish (it even has one blast beat part in it) :D It is called "Havuisissa saleissa" and it is found from their "Kertomuksia" demo and it's also found from Folk Aesthetic compilation.

I will link here one song from each of their albums so you can see how their style varies (Though their style varies a LOT within albums also).

LaUlvenDrepe's picture

I've only heard the first three songs so far but already I am very impressed. Thanks for taking the time to link these, I'm going to have to pick up some of their stuff in the future for sure.

LifeOfDeath's picture

Well I had to do something in return, as you introduced me to two great bands today. I'm glad you like them.

5
gizter's picture

i love it this way, but im not a huge fan of shading. i love simple/oldschool looking tattoos.
don't know the band, gonna give it a try.

LaUlvenDrepe's picture

Thanks!

Hope you enjoy the band.

gizter's picture

yes i do, i realy love it, its even bether than i expected. thanks.

Judas Priestess's picture

great tattoo, I haven't listened to a lot of doom metal but they sound awesome, Soul Reaver is a good game too

5
LaUlvenDrepe's picture

Haha, thanks! :D

I have to admit I'm not the biggest doom fan myself, it's not my favorite genre. But there are a few bands that I really like within the genre, Tome is one of them.

Others include Lamented Souls, Graveyard Dirt, a black/doom band called Ghast, and more that don't come to mind at the moment.

Judas Priestess's picture

yeah I would like to start listening to more doom, maybe I'll start with the bands you listed :)

5
mad_submarine's picture

You'd better start with traditional doom like Pentagram or Saint Vitus.

Judas Priestess's picture

alright thanks for the suggestion!

5
LaUlvenDrepe's picture

Cool, haha.

Let me know how it turns out!

I would also like to listen to a bit more doom than what I am familiar with, so if you run into anything incredible you should just throw it at me. My main passion is black metal, and because of that I am usually too busy and entwined within it that it becomes hard to discover bands from other genres. I try my hardest though to discover as much as possible from all sub-genres I enjoy. There is a lot of great music out there so I think it's a shame to just stick to one.

Judas Priestess's picture

I know what you mean, I mostly listen to NWOBHM and thrash but I'm trying to listen to more genres like death, black, prog and doom. I'll let you know what I find!

5
mad_submarine's picture

Oh, great, I like both the music and the cover artwork!

Satan's Finest's picture

Holy shit this is awesome! Have you shown this to the band? Matt, the guitarist/vocalist and artist is a friend of mine. I'll forward him the picture if you haven't already. I'm sure he'd love to see his art like this.

5
LaUlvenDrepe's picture

Haha, no, I have not. Go for it! I'd like to hear what he has to say about it!! \\m//
