I know I'm a couple years late, but here's some clarification: in New Zealand, "meth" is commonly used as a short for methylated spirits / methanol. It's easily purchaseable and much cheaper than actual booze, so it's a common choice for junkies who mix it with soda for a quick fix. Unfortunately long-term drinking of this stuff will cause blindness, multiple organ failure and other severe problems.
