Rustic design is kinda neat, but as I recal this album had a lot of songs about space aliens too! :P
The Gathering were this odd band. When I was a kid and first heard them, their name totally evoked some fantastic fantasy imagery, and I assumed that is what I would find in their music when I listened to a bit of the album Always. Then I saw this album and also How To Measure A Planet.
I read that Century Media wanted the Gathering to really embrace their gothic elements and take on lots of 'fairytale' imagery like that of Lake of Tears or Tiamat. They also got the title as being one of the very first gothic metal bands. They must have had a ton of pressure to just full on go goth, but they always resisted that. I even read an interview where the writer tried to get the band to pin down their album Nighttime Birds as 'pagan' mystical music. Always they resisted that..
I actually wanted them to be that, but clearly they as artists wanted to not just follow the pressure and instead do their own thing. I at least have Always and Nighttime Birds, which I think are the most gothic/fairytale of their releases.
