I Never got the appeal of this to be honest. To me it just sounds like an average stoner-track dragged out to one hour. If this had been a EP with about 15-20 minutes of music I think it would work better. As it is now it just feels overambitious and boring.

But I do must confess I love the coverart. be it the original edition or the re-release.

I do agree with you. It is too long, but it seems that it almost couldn't be shorter. If you get what i mean.

and yeah, cover art is the best i've ever seen imo

Funny you say that, because the band just kept jamming on it and said it didn't feel right when they stopped. So they just kept going until an hour and 3 minutes and finally felt it was right.I presonally prefer the Holy Mountain album though when it comes to Sleep.

It's not that I have anything against long albums or songs. Some of my favorite albums include Reverend Bizarre - So Long Suckers and Devil Doll - Sacrilegium. Hell, even Dødsengel's behemoth of an album Imperator is great.

But if this stems from a jamsession I wouldn't doubt it. The core of this song is not bad, it's really quite good. But it just wears out it's welcome in the first half hour. I get the impression it's just long for the sake of being long. Not much else.

Wtf. No, Dopesmoker is not average stoner rock and it shouldn't be shorter. The mere fact that you're saying what you said shows you never got the music. This is not a record you play once and hope to "get". The cover artwork is the last great thing about Dopesmoker.

Oh here we go again with the "you don't get it". Why can people never just accept that some bands just are not for everyone? There is no album that is universally good. And the only thing one needs to "get" from an album is wheter he likes it or not.
I'm sorry but it's just a very pompous thing to say. Like I'm too stupid to decide what I like and what I don't.

To me this is a run of the mill stoner-song, not that bad at it's core. But it feels overambitious. I can't directly say it is worthless, 'cause it's really not. It's just far to long for it's own good. I must say though that I like the hypnotic feel of it. You really feel like you are stranded on a desert panet and everything is a vague haze.
