I don't know how well known this bit of Metal trivia is, but I just thought I'd throw it out there. Their name comes from a classic 1967 Bob Dylan song entitled "The Ballad of Frankie Lee and Judas Priest". Here, listen:

What do you make of THAT?
Nater90 on
Well I be buggered! Never knew that, Thanks! But the song on the other hand....I can't stand Bob Dylan he's just terrible
Joel
He's a legend, but his musical and vocal styles are...not for everyone.
Nater90 on
No doubt he's music is amazing lyrically, My mate does a cover of All Along the Watchtower which is great, But yeah his vocals aint for all I'd agree :)
Joel
Of course we all know Jimi's iconic cover of that song:

Hahaha nice
Joel
I'm glad you like that. It's like...wheezing while you talk.
Nater90 on
True, My boss (he's 67 so loves a bunch of "classic" stuff) Showed me a cover of Radioheads - Creep it was so terrible I couldn't stop laughing
Joel
I'd like to know what that sounds like. Call it morbid curiosity.

There is a one also uploaded that's the same and says its an impersonator but it's exactly the same as my boss showed me and sounds little different to some of his other stuff so :S
Joel
Wow, that sounds awful. Enough of that!
Nater90 on
Awful is an understatement xD
Joel
No shit.

I'm pretty sure it also used to be a sort of curse word. Like people would say oh my god now, I think the phroase Judas Priest was also used liked that in the early 60s and before
The apparent story is that it was a minced oath to replace Jesus Christ.
joecubbie
Yep you're right. Back in the 40s and 50s, movies from England couldn't say "oh my god" so instead they said "Judas Priest"
Joel
You're right, it's an alternative to saying "Jesus Christ!" in an exclamatory way. Just read the history. Here...

Didn't knew they really took their name from this song, but I knew that because of this resemblance, some gig organisers made them a part of folk/country music festivals, heh...
Joel
Folk & Country festivals huh? That's a far cry from Painkiller, that's for sure.
Stiopa on
Band's sound wasn't so heavy in the 70s, but still one could feel something's wrong.
Joel
What do you mean? Like, you could see where they were headed artistically?
Stiopa on
I meant that someone allowed Hard'n'Heavy band to play on a country fest, people expect from you country songs, but you enter with Proto-Metal.
Joel
Oh, okay. So they would look like out-of-place misfits in a festival like that. Got it.
Judas Priestess on
I knew it as well but I can't stand Bob Dylan
Another Fun Fact: Technically there are no more founding members in the band of Judas Priest.
Joel
Thanks for sharing. I already knew about the original lineup. K. K. Downing was a member of a band called Freight before he formed the "new" Judas Priest with Ian Hill in 1970. Even back in '75/'76 in the Old Grey Whistle Test/Sad Wings days, Priest were, for the most part, unrecognizable compared to the days predating 1973.

I've always known that their name came from that Bob Dylan song, but what intrigued me was that the original Judas Priest split up before Freight renamed themselves. Above all, Al Atkins is the first original Judas Priest member. I'd like to hear any recordings, if possible.
On the current personnel, Ian Hill is the closest you can get to an original member being in the band.
Joel
The "other" Judas Priest is something I've always found fascinating too. From what I've heard, their music was very bluesy. Nothing remotely similar to Metal at all. And yeah, Ian Hill is pretty much the oldest school member of Priest (even though Tipton is a few years older). It used to be him and Downing until the latter unfortunately retired. From what I've heard, Ritchie Faulkner has been doing a good job.

The new guy is certainly good, aside from just looking like a younger K.K. Downing. I've got good faith that the new Judas Priest album will be AT LEAST good, and on the strength of his writing style. I think the problem for many of these big bands from many decades past is that they all pretty much already released the best stuff of their careers.
Joel
I'm confident that Redeemer of Souls is gonna be their best album since Painkiller, and yeah, you're right on that last point. I don't think there will EVER be another Sad Wings of Destiny, Stained Class, or Painkiller.
nwobhmbanger on
We'll see. If anything, it'll likely be more comparable to Angel of Retribution, which wasn't that bad of an album (just a bit underwhelming).
Joel
I just hope they wrap up Judas Priest's existence on a strong note.

Great bit of info! Thanks!! :D
Joel
You're welcome.
