i neeed some advice for sewing patches on pockets without closing off that pocket

Same as sleeves. Keep the additional, unwanted denim away from the sewing area with your ring and little finger. Also, try to keep your stitches shorter and do two "stabs" with the needle at the time without pulling the thread all the way through.

Or you always could get some fabric and sew your own pockets on the inside of your vest. I'm sure someone's made a thread on that already.

Sew like this with a jewelcase or piece of cardboard in the pocket. Or just figure out your own way to do it.
