Paradise Lost - Gothic LP

Into Glory Ride
Tue, 22/11/2016 - 00:43

The light is dim before us
Shadows appear and fall
A barrage of savage ways
Only the darkness can filter through

Not their best but still among them for sure...

Not for sale or trade

Absolutely! I just love this style of 90s Death Doom / Gothic Metal.

beautiful mate, i remember listening to this for the first time back in the day, it was like nothing else, still is.

Thanks, man! Truely a special record and i got that original pressing rather cheap on top of it..

Great band and album but I reckon Lost Paradise & Shades of God are better!

Thanks!
I agree, thos are much better indeed.

Der Todesking's picture

Really? Lost Paradise may be as good as Gothic, but not Shades... Well that's my opinion at least. When Gothic came out, there was nothing like it, & it started a real trend of 'Gothic Doom'. A timeless album.

I indeed have to revisit my opinion. I had a quite different Shades of God in mind and just listened to it again (of course not the whole album, just some spotlights). I did not recall it as that modern.... So i have to take back my opinion i guess. Lost Paradise is still their best for me thouugh, followed by Gothic.
Always interesting to hear that from someone who was around back then! What exactly was it about that record that there "was nothing like it" ? Very curious!

Danke!
Stehe total auf diesen Kram, schon ewig. alte mdb, Amorphis, Theatre of Tragedy z.T., usw.

Truly, I don't dislike Gothic don't get me wrong, I would agree that when it was released it would have stood out from the crowd and is indeed a landmark and iconic album for Death-Doom!

If someone wanted me to define Death-Doom, Any day of the week I'd hand them Lost Paradise! But Shades of God Nick's growls then cleans are just amazing! If I could sing clean I'd be heavily influenced to do similar style, Because it's just simply a masterpiece for me personally.

I love this era British doom, old like My dying bride, Anathema and Paradise lost. They was my youth :)

Absolutely the same with me. Heard My Dying Bride at first with 13 or so, do not remember the album anymore though. It started with a very sa melody and rain (surprise). Anathema , MDB, Paradise Lost, old The Gathering, Amorphis, Sentenced, .... gotta love all these!

If You like this kind of stuff, here is a little secret hint, the Vocals are a hit or miss though:

This has to be The Dreadful Hours, which you are talking about if i'm not mistaken!
Absolutely love this album, just as almost any other effort of MDB :)

Checked - Correct!
This beginning still gives me the shivers today. The moment when i heard it back then (i must have been about 15) i was completely blown away when the guitar and then the growls set in. I remember that i got it as a burned CD together with something from Anathema, i think it was Alternative 4. All thanks to the older friends of my sister. Thanks, guys! :)

Ulven's picture

Thanks for the tip. ENCHANTMENT sounds good, but maybe too much of death metal on there for my doom :)
The Blood Divine is another underrated band at 90´ for I love somewhat imperfect singing of Darren :)
Even on Anathema my favorite from older ones is Pentecost III.

I see, yeah it is quite Death-driven indeed.
I will check them out, thanks! With Anathema i do not really connect music with the particular releases, but i remember i really liked Pentecost III.

Ulven's picture

Old Anathema have been huge part of my youth, and still one of the most important bands on my life (not the new records tho)
Darren sings on Anathemas first album and EP Pentecost III after was kick out from the band. Then was Blood Divine build where Darren obviously sings.
