That's debatable, I personally prefer Under the Sign of the Black Mark.
But the importance of this album can't be overstated.

tbh i hate the goat as a symbol of bathory. Its overused, and most fans who obsess over the goat probably havent even listened to any other albums.
IMO, the debut is the worst of Bathory's first 3 albums.
Agree with you on Under the Sign, by FAR.

As a part of black metal history this is absolutely essential listening. But compared to Bathory's later works it's a bit flat. While it have some great tracks like Necromansy and Raise the Dead, the album as a whole gives of the impression that it works more on raw emotions rather than competent songwriting. A formula that yields an overall great listen, but not to many highlights. At least that's how I feel.

Yeah, definitely essential. But not worship level, IMO.
In a way this album seems to be written as the expression of the conscious mind, where under the sign was written more as the expression of the subconscious.
The themes on this seem very forced and artificial, thus it doesnt inspire me as much as it could.
Plus the production doesnt really suit the music very well.

Very, very with you on Under the Sign being more related to the subconscious. That's how it feels when I listen to it. It's certainly the most accurate lens into a demon of the first three.
