Absurd items

Got any items that you think are somehow absurd, for example it being the price, the item itself or the circumstances the item came to be? Maybe even all of the above? Some other absurdity? I think I got something here. At first, I didn't think it was really THAT absurd, but one detail about it made me literally laugh out loud.

My music collection in general started with Metallica around 1996 and has taken several directions over the years. I still am on the lookout for certain Metallica releases up until 2001, so a "metallica promo" automated eBay search is still in place.

Today, I got presented with this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/356184121399

On the first glance it looks pretty cool, but the details (not just the price) place that thing in absurd territory for me.

Besides the bands who have "played homage" to Metallica according to the description, just take a look at the CDs the "friends at MTV" were allegedly giving the performers. All of them are cutouts and at least 8 of them are ugly as hell. Since a cutout usually denotes a lower price that kinda makes you think. Would you be giving such a version to a friend? I know for a fact that starting with Load all Metallica album releases on Elektra Records (that are in this boxset) have had designated promo editions and none of them had any cutout damage like this.

Anyway, got some $4,000.00 left for some price reduced Metallica albums? Here's your chance :D

Edit: Attached item description screenshot and photos since the original listing will eventually be deleted.

Literally an absurd posting. Looks like it's been removed, which makes me think someone negotiated a deal. Either way, it's a total scam lol

He managed to get $150 for a tie dye voodoo lounge tee. Honestly impressive

People are desperate for money nationwide right now, you see some pretty oddball listings.

Don't have a screen shot sadly but I remember someone on Reverb or eBay listed this "Kvlt Guitar" from their local Canadian black metal scene. It was allegedly "cursed" and was listed at $1,100. The body looked like someone had made it in their high school woodshop and I doubt the electronics were anything better than what you get on an entry level Epiphone

Thiellus's picture

Absolutely true. Not helping us rabid collectors and our wallets at all right now...

Cursed guitars are the key ingredient to making decent black metal music, so that thing was a true investment!

Gotta let the spirit of the Axe flow through you!

$600 for a copy of "Origin of the Feces" is pretty absurd if you ask me....

EvilJay's picture

It has a median price of €150 at Discogs with a €260 max and that eBay offer is "15% off" at $593.23. Great deal!

Thiellus's picture

Man, now that you put it that way, I'm on my way to checkout!

p.s. great Seven reference ;)

Thanks! One of my favourite movies, it’s almost perfect IMHO.

Not really an oddball listing per se, but it is an odd item, a pair of Judas Priest booty shorts that I got as a joke for a beach date: https://tshirtslayer.com/other-collectable/screaming-vengeance-booty-shorts

They are actually very comfortable! I wear them as pajamas

EvilJay's picture

Nice! Don't see much band underwear around.
I have socks! Actually two sets while one looks more absurd than the other I think.

First the Megadeth socks:
https://tshirtslayer.com/other-collectable/megadeth-rust-peace-socks-2021

Quoting the description: "Got this from the official Megadeth UK merch site some time ago along with some other collectibles. Looks actually pretty neat, the packaging is rather fancy and doesn't look cheap. So even if you do "reduce" your best album to a pack of socks, you still can do it with style."

And AC/DC socks here:
https://tshirtslayer.com/other-collectable/acdc-logo-socks-leidseplein-p...

"Well, this specimen was found in the specials bin at the local grocery discounter. Bought it because it was well under 5€ and the WTF-moment I had when I saw that. A legendary band reduced to socks at a discounter, this is probably when one could say that this is rather absurd. But maybe that is even not the correct word for that, it's just devaluating. That's the vibe I get here."

motorhead vibrator is all I can think of

Agrunge hippie on a quest for heroin flyingfish2's picture

Does it play motorhead while you use it?

Thiellus's picture

I'm the vuh-vuh-vuh-vibrate-ah!

no karate in pit's picture

lol

EvilJay's picture

Did they market it as the "Motördickhead"? (Sorry)

Agrunge hippie on a quest for heroin flyingfish2's picture

I hope they did cause that would be a loose on motorheads side

Agrunge hippie on a quest for heroin flyingfish2's picture

I guess the oddes thing I own is earplugs given for free by Trigger the German grindcore band I still have an unopened pear of them since I don't use any ear protection at shows

Thiellus's picture

that's pretty dope actually

Beer.Browser's picture

I think that anyone who wants $250 for a 1994 master of puppets reprint tee is out of their mind. Best part is it's usually not a 1994 print but later and just has the old copyright date.

Thiellus's picture

never doubt the spending power of a 'tallica fan!

Agrunge hippie on a quest for heroin flyingfish2's picture

never doubt the power of posers buying this t shirts cause they are "vintage" or resellers fuck both to be honest

Beer.Browser's picture

I used to be very into the vintage scene. 80%+ of the people in it are completely insufferable so I've stepped away. You are completely correct.

Agrunge hippie on a quest for heroin flyingfish2's picture

Honestly yeah I know a reseller from my country that buys sick merch of horror movies and from the local guy I bought my new hall of t shirt and stuff and this prick is completely insufferable and resells them for a week worths of groceries

Agrunge hippie on a quest for heroin flyingfish2's picture

fucker even invaded the local Facebook metal marketplace group I'm In what a fucking prick

Thiellus's picture

I recently saw a post on IG of two guys dressed like Silent Hill characters. One was boasting about his "Cradle of Terror" shirt (filth lol) that he paid $800 on Grailed for. Imagine having that kind of trust fund $$$ and blowing it on band shirts that you can't even name the band from. Anyways, the market is definitely over saturated with this kind of thing lately.

Agrunge hippie on a quest for heroin flyingfish2's picture

omg I saw that video to but I thought they were dressed like bdsm kkk members lmao

Thiellus's picture

Something in between perhaps. It seems that video is popping up a lot lately. Hopefully for comical effect and not for inspiration.

Agrunge hippie on a quest for heroin flyingfish2's picture

also fuck those nepo baby's lol if I had this type of trust fund like this mf's I'd be spending all that shit on the local bands since local bands to me are something that I show a huge respect towards

Thiellus's picture

Hell yeah, support the underground!

Thiellus's picture

I've just found a good Burzum related nugget on eBay that I felt compelled to share:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/186723868540?_trkparms=amclksrc%3DITM%26aid%3D1...

For that price, I’d expect it to be THAT shirt (Varg included) *g*
