Tool’s infamous ‘Wrench’ shirt remained more-or-less unchanged, format-wise, through its initial run, circa 1991-2001. Rarely mentioned, however, is this early white variant, the production of which can be assumed to have ended sometime late Opiate/early Undertow-era. One theory from an online source is that the group may have funded the first batches themselves, and later relinquished them to Zoo for licensing and distribution, following their signing with the label. In fact, the earliest version printed may have not even been a full front, but rather a smaller pocket-sized logo over the left breast (pictured below, also worn by Adam back in ’92 – you know, from the first E.P.), a format they would loosely revisit on the later “Pyramid” shirt. This full-front version is perhaps most identifiable from an early promo shot of the band Peach, in which Justin, a member at the time, can be seeing wearing it. It was also worn by then-manager Ted Gardner.
Finally, this may also explain the eventual color inversion on the black shirt; the same screen here was likely recycled for use with white ink on black fabric, following this white shirt's discontinuation.
