"Recorded live during the Sonic Solstice Festival at Rockefeler, Oslo, September 24, 2005.
Remastered vinyl version of Arcturus "Shipwrecked in Oslo". 180-gram Black 2xLP limited to 150 copies. 90 copies outside of USA/Canada and 60 copies inside USA/Canada."

Sadly, they excluded Sverd's masterful keyboard solo from this live album... that's just bullshit. Still, this sounds SOOOOOOOOOOOOO much better than the DVD, MASSIVE improvement!

I really like Aspera Hiems Symphonia, and the EP before that. I know you're a huge fan of this band, so any recs in that vein? :-)
I'm kinda hesitant on experimenting with later Arcturus tbh...

Unfortunately for you, no, none whatsoever. I always warn new Arcturus listeners that it's just a band that isn't for everyone, you know?

I mean, come on... it's an avant-garde metal band, that alone should let people know that it's an acquired taste. I didn't always like them all that much, but they grew on me with a passion, and now as you know they're my favorite band. It's just a very unique band, as in... the epitome of unique. My favorite of their albums is La Masquerade Infernale :D

I could try to describe their later sounds album for album if you'd like, just because you've always been one of my favorite TSS users, haha.

La Masquerade... is an incredibly dark album, both in atmosphere, and lyrically. It's guitars are heavy, yet at times lower in the mix, depending on the mood of each song. The bass is incredible, and always ever so present. Keyboards are really masterful, setting the tone for the entire album and always audible. Drums are beyond amazing, and intricate (such as is expected from Hellhammer). The vocals, while top-notch (as is expected of Garm, one of the best vocalists of all time, in my opinion)... are operatic, and odd sounding. Almost like a shape shifting vocal variation of Lucifer.

The Sham Mirrors is HEAVY as fuck! The guitars are just so... UGGGHHH!! The bass is loud as hell, it's like the guitars and bass are competing on volume and heavy tones, haha. The keyboards are even MORE beautiful than in the previous album. The drumming matches the rest of the instruments in aggression. It's still really complicated, but more relentless this time. The vocals, while even more operatic, are less weird sounding, and would take less of an effort to get used to. They are also louder. The general atmosphere is reminiscent of space and the cosmos.

Then there's their latest full-length effort... Sideshow Symphonies. Great album! Not as good as the others, but I still consider it a masterpiece. It's general atmosphere is also space, but even more so than in the last one. The keyboards are as beautiful as ever, no complaint there. The vocals are operatic, but more soothing this time around, as it is Simen from Lamented Souls who at that point had replaced Garm as vocalist. These vocals take even LESS of an effort to allow them to grow on you, if needed at all. The drums are great, no problem there... the only problem I have with the album, and the thing that keeps it from being as good as the others is the final mixing from the label. They fucked up, and remixed it (I think by accident, not knowing that Arcturus had already done it, but not sure about that "fact"). Anyway, the problem was that the guitars and bass suffered a slight volume problem... I wish I knew what EXACTLY happened... but yeah, they are a lot lower in the mix... which is a shame, because they sound as great and creative as ever.

If you're hesitant on checking them out, but still wish to do so... start with whatever sounds more appealing out of what I just described, that should help! Good luck!

I'm sorry for replying very late! Thank you for the descriptions of the albums. "Shape shifting vocal variation of Lucifer" is more than enough to make me want to listen to La Masquerade Infernale already. I will download it. :-)

Haha yes they really aren't a band for everyone are they. I've been familiar with the name for a long time but held off on listening to them because of the mixed opinions I've heard and read about them... only listened to them after seeing their name in your profile, and you have good taste, so okay, I gave them a go at last hahaha.

The first thing that got me about this band were the GORGEOUS melodies sprinkled throughout. Sometimes you just don't feel like listening to the harshest, most nauseating metal you know?

Once again, thank you for being long-winded (haha) my dear LaUlvenDrepe!

Not a problem! I always enjoy talking to you :D

I really hope you end up liking them, just remember that each album pretty much sounds like a different band. So, don't feel discouraged if you don't like one album. I think that just being an avant-garde band will automatically get you mixed opinions, so yeah... still, anybody who can't at least respect how greatly skilled they are (regardless of liking their sound or not) is just foolish.

Thank you for complimenting my taste in music, that's pretty much the best compliment ever! Haha.

And yes, although lately I have been listening to some pretty damn heavy, repulsive stuff (Nekrofilth junkie)... I do know what you mean. Sometimes you're just simply not in the mood for extremely "heavy" stuff.

Arcturus never really sat well with me. The last time I listened to them must have been in 2004 or something. Anyways, after reading this I tried Le Masquerade. I actually LIKED it!!

My old guitarist was a big time Arcturus fiend, just like you are. Never understood why, but I can kind of see now. There's interesting stuff there to be learnt.

Listening to it AGAIN for the fourth or fifth time. Do you get this dark circus-y vibe from the album too? Mostly from Garm's vocal acrobatics.

I love this album.

LaUlvenDrepe's picture

Why hello there, haha... I'm loving the fact that you've already heard it four or five times :D

And YES is the answer to your question, that whole album sounds like a pitch black creepy circus in which you could not see anything but the stars and the moon, especially on the track that Garm was not the LEAD vocalist, The Chaos Path. That was Simen's time to shine, and shine he did.

How good are the songs Ad Astra and Alone? Wow...

Edgar Allen Poe did an awesome job on the "lyrics" to Alone, haha.

Hey hey!! :)

I'm super glad that you've acquired a taste for Arcturus, don't worry... I didn't like them all that much when I first head it, La Masquerade... was so odd sounding to me at first. But wait... what's this? Arcturus is now my favorite band and La Masquerade Infernale is my favorite of their albums! Haha. I don't even know how that happened, I can't remember. It must have just grown on me.
