I used specific acrylic paints that are normally used for wargaming miniatures (like for Warhammer), then varnished it.

This really came to life with a paintjob, the green quill makes it pop a bit. I know the album is quite recent but the painted pin looks like something from the 80s, more so than the cover art itself. Nice work!
