No, he did it by hand. First wet the leather, then do the motif with hammer and a sort of nail, as you can see on the picture. It's called "punsa" in Swedish. Don't know the English word...
But he is an amazing artist!

In German this way of working with leather is called "punzieren".
Your friend is really talented and you got an amazing and unique backpatch - priceless
