I see a lot of ads for alleged "Darkthrone Lurex patches" that aren't Lurex patches. Lurex thread glitters, and in older patches the thread can be seen shimmering from behind the black surface too, not just in the letters themselves. If it doesn't glitter, it's not Lurex.
Usually this means that the seller
a) doesn't know that there are at least two different versions of the same patch,
b) they don't know much about patches and textiles in general, and
c) they just blindly parrot what other traders have been parroting.
(*)
I'm sure this incredible, shocking, unexpected revelation (because who thought that there was ANY misinformation in the metal merch market EVER?) will result in price increases for the actual Lurex versions, and in more people trying to distinguish themselves as expensive in-the-know sellers who are better than the parroting ones, but it needed to be said anyway.
If you see people selling dull patches as Lurex patches,
a) let them know and
b) let us know here in the thread.
Doc: not sure if discussion of patches is supposed to go under "general" or "shirts". Feel free to move it.
(*) Because let's not assume that any metal merch sellers, ever, use misinformation in their ads on purpose.

I've never heard of this term before.
I'm working on a jacket at the moment, I don't like glitter thread, so I haven't got any.
However, two of my favourite patches -
Saxon - 'Rock The Nations' and King Diamond - 'The Eye' have a shimmer on some of the details, so not sure what they're classed as!

Sounds like a condom brand hahaha

Hahaha I wouldn't know!
I'm at that stage of a relationship where she stays in her part of the house, I stay in mine!

Just google Lurex thread. You've seen it in patches and garments, particularly feminine ones.

Yeah, never liked that sort of thread on my patches personally!
This is an example of the patch I have, that's not got that lurex thread, but the details still 'shimmer' in the light -

That's an outstanding design. The level of detail that creates the relief effect in the block letters is amazing. I've honestly not seen a patch like this before.

King Diamond has the same effect too!
Saxon is one of my favourites, really easy to get hold of too. There's a few now on eBay.
I got mine sealed with the, 'Waiting for the Night' single.

I'll upload a comparison photo next week, but note that I didn't say "fake patch" anywhere, only "different versions". I doubt that the non-glittering version is a fake because the (rather intricate) shape of the logo is the same, but then I'm not an expert on patch history.
Edit: if you meant links to ads, that'd be pointless as the ads will long be deleted if & when this thread here sticks around, so why don't you just search for the terms I mentioned on eBay and see if you're shown two different versions of the same patch (currently true).
