right now i am sewing a doom back patch (the graphic from bury the debt not the dead/no security, also used for total doom) cut in a circle, but i put a disorder patch on the front!
cracking is an inevitability. to prevent this as much as possible i use a good to medium quality OIL BASED black acrylic paint. 2 coats and you should be good to go!
i believe the brand of acrylic paint i used was "Windsor & Newton". Oil based acrylic paint costs more than water based but is worth it, after a year or so i have a little cracking on high use areas, but two coats or more helps stop cracking, but eventually the cracked parts looks cool too

when i painted i used a cheap throw away foam pad brush but it kinda sucked
