Imho it depends on the type. I mean a backpatch with silver thread would look horrible but it's awesome for details. Got a Motörhead patch with some silver details and it looks great. Definetely agree that it's a very niche type though.

Leprosy is an eyesore. Was the designer too cheap to buy another color to distinguish the leper from the background?

I disagree. In my opinion it would look odd with too many colours. It's better to find few things that work.
