gloriousdeath
hehe yeah you're right man !!! It is what we where discussing here above... 8 strings in metal.... if you can speak of metal with this whole djent thing... is most of the time pretty useless. Apart from Meshuggah and Tosin Abasi it's not really something i'm interested in. I'm more interested in people like Robert Conti, Charlie Hunter etc. ....it's fascinating to see them play basslines, rhythm and solos at the same time. Having said that i must admit these things surpass my capacities... guess i have to study harder... or start a poser band hahaha

I fail to see why have more than six strings makes anybody a poser. Rather than that, I think that the word 'poser' gets thrown around entirely way too much.
That said, I do understand what you mean in a way about the ability of the guitar player itself. I'm not going to lie, I only listen to one band with a guitar player who uses more than six strings, and it actually happens to be my favorite band. But yeah, what I am trying to say is that if you don't necessarily know how to use and input the extra strings in a creative way then you probably shouldn't play it.
I hate bands like Korn and Limp Bizkit (or however the fuck you spell that) that just use the thicker string for that "chunky" tremolo picking or just to sound heavier in general, because they think that "heaviness" is what makes metal.
But in the case of the one band I mentioned I listen to... the guitar player uses a seven string and he uses it very well, in my opinion. He uses it frequently, but not to an overwhelming point, and it's mostly for this bombastic sound that he layers on top of the other strings. It's hard to describe, but it sounds like a loud and really heavy spacey effect.
gloriousdeath
Well, you described very well why some of these persons can be called posers: if they think that "heaviness" only makes their music already metal.... we both know it takes more than that !! Unfortunately 8 string guitars are associated with this djent thing; it's somewhat of an hype, atracting kids who think they're metal which they're def. not, since they lack the feeling, the passion. At least thats the feeling i get listening to a lot of those bands.... well, anyway, i couldn't care less.
Please tell me which band you're mentioning... sounds interesting.

Well yeah, I guess you have a point there... but what I mostly meant was that it's generally wrong to just assume that the band is full of "posers" just because you notice the guitar player's guitar has more than six strings. I know that because of those shitty bands we all mentioned that those type of guitars get a bad rep, but still...
But anyway, I must have forgotten to name the band. It's Arcturus. They're not for everyone since they are an avant-garde metal band. I normally don't like that genre, but they are great in my opinion.
To best pin-point the sound that I described on the guitar, you should check out the album called "The Sham Mirrors". That's the best example of the effect I meant, but all of their albums are masterpieces if you ask me. The first album has a different guitar player, and he uses a regular six string.
gloriousdeath
Ah Arcturus; now that is a band that i respect !!! I'm not to familiar with their later works; do have my angel 7", constellation ep and Aspera hiems symfonia CD....

No, just because you want it to be doesn't make it that simple. They might not NEED more than six strings but if they want it, and are actually going to use it creatively then that's more than enough.
Most bands with such guitarists tend to suck ass, but either way.
In any case I've already mentioned a band that makes more than six strings worth it, but as you've stated and repeated in pretty much every Arcturus post I have... you don't like them. That's not my problem though, and it certainly doesn't make them posers.
