Area sounds right. At least the building still stands and hasn't been gentrified, rare these days. I wonder if Record Head is still in biz, metal stuff used to turn up very reliably there. Owned/operated by Vietnam vet. Ever been to Metal Haven in Chicago, the old Belmont location? Such a nostalgia kick now for brick and mortar indie shops.
Yeah some of the old Hungarian boots are real beauties and the rubber patches certainly have an interesting history behind them.
Yugoslavia was a really unique case. As a "socialist" unaligned country not a part of the eastern bloc, there were no bans on any kind of music and the scene really thrived. Hell, even the state owned publishing companies published metal and extreme metal releases. They published entire discographies of bands like Iron Maiden (even toured here as early as 1981), and here's a more extreme example from a 1987 compilation:
Given the presence on TSS lately it seems like your region is still carrying that torch! Yeah the Eastern Bloc rubber patches are quite the historical item these days, one Russian guy was saying they were secretly made at the factories that produce military ensignas after hours hahaha. Now that's the metal way!
The real gem, in my opinion, are the "Hungarian bootlegs" because of their original yet crisp and colorful graphics. There are some floating around TSS if you search for them.
This explains Metallica' "phase of nu-metal iconography"... just look who they were touring with! Hahaha. Early 2000s core is quite nostalgic these days, but I'm sure this looked weird to long-time fans at the time.
Really is! And true about over-clutter. You had some of that back in the day too, but it was less common and more regional. Here in Yugoslavia during the 80s most metal fans just wore a plain denim/leather jacket sometimes with a band tee. Less patches were available, especially woven ones. If you got your hands on some it was probably a shitty printed or rubber patch. But people couldn't care less as we had a real world class scene back then. I can send you some music recs if interested...
