Painting Denim

Howdy. I have a denim jacket I want to paint. I've already done a screen printing ink experiment but I'd like to try a different method of painting denim. I see there are members here who paint their denim. My question is; do you usually paint your denim with acrylic paint? And if indeed you do, what brand of acrylic do you commonly use for the results you're looking for? Additionally have you ever waxed the denim after painting it? If so what happened?

My screen printing ink painted denim for reference

thank you in advance for your your answers and advice you will give me!

Mmmm, I can't answer all your questions, but this has been my experience with Fabric Paints:

The "Folk Art" brand of Fabric Paints in my previous experience was very good, it even had that "crackled paint look" as the years went on while still adhering to the fabric. However I don't really know if they are still around (cause I haven't looked in several years) but places like ebay still carry the paints.

Be wary of brands that "appear" to be high quality and are iffy, but are not really meant for Fabrics. I've run into the problem of surfaces rubbing off my paint AND depositing the color somewhere else on the jacket [like a nearby patch, or rubbed into another surface, ie a Chair Cushion.] And yes, it's very lame, paint being distributed where you don't want it, and on things you don't want it on in the first place... One such brand to look out for is "Arteza." If your truly hellbent for getting the "perfect paint" then I recommend inquiring at an Arts and Crafts forum, or a forum that specifically deals with Sewing, they will know for sure. I'd love to know the "best" product info, or even what forums to check out, but my knowledge is incomplete.

I also recommend painting several layers so the paint penetrates the fabric, but it's not necessary to excessive about that either, having the paint show up on the other side is unnecessary.

And as always: Always pencil-in the image first. Make sure you draw it as best as possible too, it pays off in the end.

Go for the Steak and potatoes first: Don't fret too much about sharp, pointy, corners, and edges in the beginning, paint the majority of the image first and then perfect everything jagged. Granted you could tackle those first, but just make sure you don't try paint the main body of the image and the Sharp corners/points all in one go, because your brush will eventually "fan-out" during a long stroke and it will be challenging to form a thin line for all the fine details.

Get the right Brushes: 2 brushes is ok. One to really soak up the paint and distribute it across long brush strokes, it doesn't have to be big. And a second brush that's very very thin and short for making clean corners and sharp points.
