I turned an old sweatshirt jacket into a battle jacket. I cannibalized a few old shirts (duplicates), and sewed on some cheap cloth patches. The jacket is lightweight and is ideal for warm weather.
I either used a rotary cutter on a cutting board, or just a good pair of fabric scissors. I used a tight cross stitch on my sewing machine, which is a Husqvarna Viking. Great machine, easy to use.
