I do the same with sewing machine when I cut out a patch.
try to set the speed on lowest setup and the stitching arm with low pressure

I think at I must read the sewing machines manual becouse it cuts my thread off sometimes, and make pretty ugly sewing sometimes. :D And i dont dare to break it becouse its my mothers machine! :D Haha :D
