Well, its maybe easier to do with an soldering iron because it stays heated the whole time. If you use a needle you have to stick it into a flame (from a candle mostly) so it gets heated up. Then it will just manage to cut through not even an inch till it cools down and then you need to heat it up again.
With an needle it takes much longer but you can be way more precise with it.

No i heated up a needle with a candle and basicly burned through it.
