Do the edges fray over time on self-shaped patches? I'm thinking of doing this myself, but would hesitate if it diminishes the life of the patch.

Depending on the type of patch. When you shape a patch you should always burn a little bit the edges to "seal" them. I have a self-shaped woven Testament logo patch on my battlejacket for more than 3 years and it looks like new. However if you have patch that is printed on a simple piece of fabric (like this one :https://tshirtslayer.com/patch/ravencult-logo-patch ) then it will definitely fray to the point of no return. When I sheped the Ravencult logo I first burned the edges and then dipped then in super glue.
So if you do it the rigth way you will have no problem with self-shaped patches. Hope this helps !
