Yes! An intricate patch filled entirely with stitches (the seven sisters patch) can take months.
A normal sized patch not filled up (the overkill horroscope posted on my page) takes a couple days to a week depending on detail.
And a minimal patch (like a logo patch) takes only two days.
You can learn certain stitches, but embroidery is best learned with experience. This very website has the best references!
