i am working on a pair myself. i don't find the sewing that much of a problem. but pinning them on there is horrible. but thats just me, others might have diffrent problems.
The only difficulty that I have run into with patches on pants is massive fraying. If you are using cloth patches (which I think look the best on pants) I would suggest hemming the edges of the patches. That will make them durable and last through endless washes.
