I remember the first time I heard this album. Such a sinister take on the whole black/folk metal sound.

Indeed!
World changer for me and one of all time favorites still.

I think my first exposure to the whole folk metal thing was Finntoll's Jaktens Tid. And while I still enjoy that album for what it is, a fun romp through the Scandinavian folk lore that goes great with a few cheap lagers and some good laughs, this was something totally different. It really opened up my eyes to what you could really do with folk music in terms of atmosphere and themes. This along with Ulver and Wyrd's early albums pretty much dominated my stereo/mp3 player when I was around 16 or so.

For me first folk metal band was Moonsorrow and demo Tämä ikuinen talvi. Never liked Finntroll for some reason. But I never considered Arckanum as folk metal, but purely forest black metal at is pure sense of word. Although I know its not so called genre so to speak, but I like to make my own to what something sounds to my ear :)

Maybe not a purely folk metal band, but with enough elements to lean in that direction. At least in my pubescent mind. ^^
I loved how this band took the rather trite subject of Norse mythology and did it's own thing with it. Using old proto-Swedish for the lyrics, singing about the dark forces of nature and the degradation of the aesir. In a musical climate dominated by Amon Amarth, Ensiferum and such this was a fresh, much needed take on the whole viking concept.
