I love the music - It's the ultimate answer to the question "is there a way Abruptum could have been delivered better?". Stalaggh was great, Gulaggh should continue to finish what they started because the work was not done!
I think Abruptum blows Stalaggh out of the water personally. The "In Umbra..." album is just such a perfect audial interpretation of those old Bosch and Breugel depictions of the christian hell. Stalaggh might arguably be more genuinely dismal and mental, but in terms of pure musical qualities(as far as any of these bands can be labeled music or indeed even bands), It's no question in my mind that Abruptum holds the upper hand.
I like your perspective a lot; I never considered an environment of that caliber for the atmosphere. Stalaggh has surely encapsulated the inner spiritual effects of global institutionalism; judicial, correctional, psychiatric, health care, religious, financial and educational institutions all cause this effect on the people of the world... Madness isn't always expressed with a scream or a frown any more than happiness expressed with a laugh or a smile. Thanks for your insight on the Abruptum album, I'm gonna have to spin that album again and get deeper into the music this time.
Maybe it's all about what you're looking for. I've never really been in contact with any form of psychiatric institute. I had a girlfriend who was completely bonkers once, but that's as close as I'll probably ever get. My point is, I really can't relate to how an intern at a place like that feels, and as such I think the Stalaggh albums might go over my head a bit.
But as an avid fan of gothic horror and a curious observer of religious art I have an easier time digesting and appreciating what Abruptum is trying to do with their albums.
But i agree with you that emotions to expression isn't as self explanatory as some people like to think. The one who laughs the most might be the one who'll most likely putt a razor to the veins the same night.

I've always felt that the story behind the music is more interesting than the music itself. But I can't deny that this edition looks really good.
