I've noticed a few action shots of people with sewing machines. I've always sewn my patches by hand. Am I the only one? Is this how you normally sew patches? Am I behind on the times?
I hand sew the ones over pockets and machine sew the rest. Machine sewing is so much easier to keep the patch straight and if you know what you're doing is faster
I sewed my kutte all by hand, but for my leather project I am going to get help with someone who has a machine for certain parts of the back patch, other parts I will just use hand and my own strength. Back when I was in highschool, they taught us in home ec with a sewing machine, but it's more practical to learn by hand, even the average low quality sewing machine cost's quite a bit of money, it's simply not something I want to spend money on. I would like to learn embroidery to create my own patches, but I don't have the time....so for now, blood, sweat, whiskey and sewing by hand is the best!
by hand. But fully understand using a machine. Would probably use a machine if I had one and knew how to use it. But I also enjoy the process of doing it by hand.
I sew everything by hand on my kutte. I wouldn't use a machine because it's to noisy to me. Sewing is like meditation with some good music. You focus on your hands, the thread, the needle, the patch and your kutte and everything else gets blurry and doesn't matter anymore.... thats normally the point when I scream something like verfickte scheiße because I lanced my fingers again.
I like sewing by hand. It's more satisfying.
i sew by hand, only because 1.sewing machines are too fucking expensive 2.im too inept to use a machine 3. i feel its more personal to hand sew it, makes it that much better
I've never EVER used a machine, everything is done by hand :)
It's just nice to look back at your jacket thinking about the many many hours you've put into it.
I'm about the same speed as Hárbarðr, about one patch per hour. I guess it would really be useful to know how to use a machine, and to be good at it, and have space for it. But I imagine for some of us, having a sewing machine would be like bringing a precision anti-material rifle to a fork fight. A needle and thread are much more compact, although time consuming. I haven't had any patches falling off yet.
would be like bringing a precision anti- material rifle to a fork fight, LOL - that made my day!

Haha, yes. I always double my thread, and I use a technique called the "back stitch", and I always make little short stitchings real close together. In addition to that, I am simply slow. But I think I do a good job, and none of my patches have ever come off, unless I took them off. Once I watched the movie "Dr. Zhivago" while I sewed three patches, and after the movie was done I had still not finished sewing hahaha.
Usually I'll listen to an ambient playlist on youtube for hours while sewing. It's like meditation hahaha.
I guess how much thread I'll need for a particular patch and then double it over. I also use a heavy duty needle for leather. I've redone them many times as I have to have them as straight as possible.
It doesn't help that I listen to youtube videos in the background. I spend more time searching for something interesting to listen to then sewing.

I always do it by hand. I don't have a sewing machine but for me doing it by hand works fine so I don't see any reason to do it any other way

Only by hand - and I never stitched my finger so hard, that it started bleeding. ^^
And I think I can sew heavier than a machine. But it takes me about 40 to 100 minutes to sew on a patch. But it's fucking worth it.

I apply that iron on paper from walmart to make it an iron-on patch, then sew on by hand. Makes it a little easier then using pins.
