I feel like Carnivore is a Leeway/S.o.d. type of situation same goes for very very early type o negative i do agree with obituary though

How do you categorize straight up crossover bands then? D.R.I, Nuclear Assault, the Accused, early C.O.C, and previously mentioned S.O.D? Metal or hardcore? Great discussion topic BTW you have me engaged

Depends in my opinion on their starting motives S.o.d. was always those guys from CBGB same as Leeway despite a huge part of them having a lot of trash influence i feel like they have always had the idea to be an NYC hardcore band while nuclear assault i don't see them as the type of guys to go around and hang with Agnostic front, Madball, Merauder, Skarhead and ect while S.O.D, Carnivore and Leeway have specifically hanged around with those specific guys plus Life of Agony,H2O,Crown of thornz, Murphy's law and much more
RAT COVENANT on
It is probably be the other way around in this case, but some Japanese hardcore bands from the 80's have quite a lot of Heavy / Speed Metal influences in their sound, many of those bands are even categorized as their own subgenre which is called Burning Spirits.
In my opinion those are the most essential releases:
G.I.S.M. - Detestation
Ghoul - Jerusalm
Gastunk - Gastunk
Bastard - Wind Of Pain
Death Side - Bet On The Possibility
Crow - Bloody Tear
