For Euro death it’s Unleashed - Where No Life Dwells and Gorefest‘s False.
For American death it’s Immolation - Dawn Of Possession i think.
In my opinion of course.
If someone says Death Metal and you think those albums, That's a good thing. For me one of many would be Cannibal Corpse - Vile because their track Bloodlands got me into Cannibal Corpse / Death Metal in general.
Always preferred ...For Victory, but The 4th Crusade has subtlety, something rare in death metal. I wouldn't say it perfectly sums up death metal as a whole but it's certainly an interesting side of the genre that I wish more bands would explore.
Too hard to pick one. Sadistic intent's resurrection is gold, but so is severed survival or scream bloody gore for example. The abhorrence ep is one of my favorites too.
I had to think really hard about this one but at the end I always come back to Athiest - Unquestionable Presence or Eternal Suffering - Drowning in Tragedy. Both are perfection imo and especially the latter has a lot of personal bearing to me
its 23 year old album. Its been a while. released sometime at the end of 1995. Although I sometimes ask people if they like the new At the Gates album slaughter of the soul...and get a very funny look back :)
just one is hard, since there are many different Death-styles out there... :)
but i would say:
Six Feet Under - The Haunted & Dismember - Like an ever flowing stream & Altar - Provoke
Bolt Thrower - The IV Crusade
Asphyx - The Rack
And although I've always been more on the doom/death side, Left Hand Path has always been a personal favourite.
it's weed-themed, the song names are puns of other death metal song titles, but the songs themselves are original, and really great death metal in general. Highly (pun intended) recommend these guys, they deserve so much more exposure
Morbid Angel "Blessed are the Sick" is forever going to be my favorite death metal album, everything from the songs, the production, the ambient/instrumental pieces, to the album art and overall package layout is perfection.
Close second for me is Broken Hope "Swamped in Gore".... Doesn't have the atmosphere of Morbid Angel but it's perfect to me as far as being some of the nastiest sounding old school death with also some of the most putrid, toilet gurgling vocals ever performed on a dm record (I almost said laid to tape but then remembered that album was recorded digitally :)

Altars of Madness. Unique riffs in every song, everything is distinct and doesn’t blend into other songs & the tones are all great too.
Personal favourite though is the Galvanizer EP, Horrid Tales of Death
DeathFuckinMetal on
I'd say Dismember Like An Everflowing Stream, from start to finish every song just slays!

Am I retarded for suggesting The lVth Crusade? And not that it's a personal favorite but I'm surprised no one has mentioned Here in After. .

Unquestionable Presence is a masterpiece. Would be amazing if Atheist did a tour playing it in full.
I think a lot will agree on albums, But personal feelings always make it that much more special.

Apart from the obvious classics I would say Repugnant's "Epitome of Darkness". This album is EVERYTHING a death metal record should be.

Besides the classics most uf us agree on, I'd like to throw in
Benediction - Transcend the Rubicon
and
The Crown - Death Race King
Hufsa on
Crucifixion – Paths Less Taken
Extremely underrated death metal perfection.
Vectrex on
Temple Nightside - The Hecatomb
Literally sounds like a Necromancer is screaming in a crypt while the Dead and Skeletons rise up.

Obituary - Cause of Death belongs in anybody's top ten DM albums.
