I’ve always never really liked black metal but I wanna try to get into it. What are some bands and albums I should check out to get into black metal?

Storm of the Light's Bane from Dissection, it's a masterpiece on its own. (the debates are open if some disagree on Dissection being fully BM haha)

100% agree with this.

It depends on what type of style within the genre you wish to explore really.

Deathspell Omega - Si monvmentvm requiris, circumspice
Negură Bunget - Om
Emperor - Anthems To The Welkin At Dusk

Teitanblood - Death
Katharsis - VVORLDVVITHOUTEND
Negative Plane - Et in Saecula Saeculorum

Emperor - in the nightside eclipse
Darkthrone - Transylvanian Hunger
Dissection - storm of the light’s bane
Mayhem - de mysterris dom sathanas
Burzum - Aske
Immortal - sons of northern darkness

I started out with Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk, Storm of the Lights Bane, In The Nightside Eclipse and Blood Fire Death. Transilvanian Hunger and Hvis Lyset Tar Oss took a little longer to grow on me. Stronghold by Summoning was another early favorite.
It should also be noted that anyone who got into black metal i during that mid/late 90s wave also enjoyed Dusk and Her Embrace at some point, whether they admit it or not.

a different twist on the scandi stuff but maybe bands like mystifier, black witchery, conqueror (which i guess would be considered more war metal), absu, early morbid angel demos like thy kingdom come, profanatica, sarcofago... I got a lot out of reading bardo methodology as well that introduced me to a lot of cool bands and labels that i hadnt heard of.
Edit: A scandi exception but be sure to check out beherit too!

Darklord's picture

I guess I'll start my descent with Dissection and Darkthrone they seem to make the top of most people's list. Thanks
