A Night at the Fallout

Last Friday, as I was laying in bed being lazy and probably listening to BÖC, I said to myself, "Joe you should get off your ass and do something tonight." And I said back, "Eh, sure." So I check out my social media to see if there's anything going on that night and sure enough there's a show going on at local DIY hangout, The Fallout. Considering I haven't been there in ages and all my friends were gonna be there, I figured, what the hell!

Headlining the night was local grind veterans Pig Champion playing their final show. Unfortunately, I was super tired by the time they came on (well, everyone was), so I headed out because it was like 2 in the morning and as much as I could have pulled through for another half hour, did I really want to? Nah. I had a long day and was ready to crash.

The show itself had a late start. It was supposed to start at 8, but the sound guy flaked and the promoter had to scramble to find somebody else. By the time local old school metalcore disciples Dethbeds were on, it was nearing 9:30. Other local bands were thrashers Savagery and Smash Potater. My friend Nick from Texas Toast Chainsaw Massacre played the role of Smash's chicken mascot during their set. A moshing chicken? Yep. It doesn't get much more metal than that.

Next up was Deathcrown from the east coast. After hearing their EP, I was rather disappointed in their live show. I don't know. They just seemed to be lacking the OSDM fury they capture so well in the studio.

The last band I stuck around for was Michigan's Sunlight's Bane who if were to be described in one word, the word would be "cathartic". Playing a hybrid of black metal, grindcore, and crust punk, these guys will decimate you. If they ever come back, I'll certainly be there. I highly recommend them if you're into Young and in the Way, Dragged into Sunlight, and Anaal Nathrakh.
