Not at all. Just one of the best epic series of all time. :) It's dealing with Tony Soprano, a fictional American Mafia Boss and his story. It's absolutely amazing. If You like "Der Pate", i really recommend You to check this out. It's made by HBO, who also made the Game of Thrones Series for example.

Does GoT have a large following in Germany? US has rabid supporters, but I'm not familiar with how strong the international support is for the series

I would say the following is huge. The time when the series started to air on German television and slowly get popular You could look around in busses, trams, trains and had the feeling suddenly everyone is reading the books, from age 16 to 60 basically and that ranged from the typical Fantasy Fan with long hair to the bank employee.
And it's still going strong.

I myself did not read the books or watched the series yet but that is just because of a lack of time and too many books that are more urgent.
