Enuff Z'Nuff

Last Friday I went to see Enuff Z'Nuff at a sports bar about an hour away from me. This is the same one Uriah Heep played last year. I'm going to see Grim Reaper there next month as well as Diamond Head. I know, a weird venue for NWOBHM bands indeed haha.

Not gonna lie, it took me a while to get into Enuff Z'Nuff. For years I dismissed them as nothing more than second wave hair metal fluff along the lines of Slaughter, Winger, and FireHouse (all who suck). Then my friend told me to check out Strength, Animals with Human Intelligence, and 1985 about a year go and I was impressed. Enuff Z'Nuff is not a metal band in the slightest, but also didn't belong in that batch of posers they were lumped in. Musically they have much more in common with Cheap Trick than Poison. I'd describe their sound as a bizarre mix of hard rock, power pop, and psychedelia. To anyone who hasn't heard them other than their first album, check them out.

The first band playing that night was a local group called Sun Stood Still and they were terrible. They were some dad rock band who looked like they had just gotten off work and sounded like they could've been played on the radio alongside Nickelback and Trapt. Bland and boring. They're opening up for Jack Russell's Great White which is good cuz it gives me a half hour to take a crap and look at merch.

The following band was another local opener called Chronic Edge. I had heard of them around the area, but hadn't gotten around to checking out their music. Holy shit they were good! I had pretty much given up on all local hard rock bands until I saw these guys. They were the shot in the arm I needed after Sun Stood Still. I highly recommend them. Very much along the lines of Y&T.

Finally it was time for Enuff Z'Nuff. We got up front on the floor for this one and about 20 other people followed us. Chip and the boys played about an hour set and absolutely rocked it. The current version of Enuff Z'Nuff which includes Chip on bass and vocals, as well as two guitarists, kills. There were a lot of people who saw them last year as a trio with some guy named Johnny Monaco (I think) singing and playing guitar. They all told me they weren't half as good as they were last Friday. Unless Donnie Vie kicks his drug habits, this lineup is here to stay.

The best part of the night though was being able to confirm something I had been looking forward to for about a year now. I can't say yet, but it's some big news that will certainly be documented via actionshots for TSS. This should be around the middle of next month...stay tuned...
