I had the huge honor of filling in for Exmortus at Modified Ghost Festival in Vancouver BC (I learned the set in 3.5 weeks and had no rehearsals with the band prior to playing) which was nerve wracking to say the least given the large number of attendees (including the band Blasphemy who I would probably never go see or support in any way and who inadvertently paid to see the churchgoing drummer, makes me laugh when I realize that I now own their souls) but I killed it. Or at least I think that I did. A night to remember!
There wasn't a soundcheck for us due to where we were positioned in the playing order. Voivod soundchecked. Exciter checked drums. I think the very first band checked because they had some extra time. We just got onstage and played. I have the snare drum head I used, it's covered in weird crib notes haha. It was a fun night!
Very cool!! I used to see these guys play at tiny little venues before they really hit their stride (wish "Axes of War" was still in their live setlist...).
Pretty inspiring that you mastered their set in under a month. Oh and congrats on redeeming Blasphemy from eternal damnation too hahahaha
I played a show with these guys in Portland, OR in 2007 and they were INSANE! I think Balmore was the oldest guy in the band at that point and he was not old enough to drink. Conan was 16. They played Axes of War and my all time fave, Hatred's Flames. Dude Blasphemy looked like they were going to take the stage at any moment, like they dress like that all time I guess? I was terrified/intrigued/amused/bewildered....it was an emotional night....
Oh and Charlie, I was meaning to ask you about your health. I know that you were diagnosed with cancer quite awhile back and wanted to see how you were doing. You're in my prayers and thoughts, man!
aside from being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in late 2012 (when i was on my last year of chemo (which i finished in 2013), i'm just fine. it was quite a thing to go through, especially since i was only 15 when i was diagnosed (just a couple of weeks away from my birthday) but i wasn't really bothered or worried much as apart from taking countless trips to the hospital for whatever reason, i just relaxed most of the time lol. thank you very much & God bless.

Awesome! Did you at least get to run through some songs in sound check?
