Yep. It's hard to believe that once upon a time Molly Hatchet would play football stadiums like that on a regular basis. Now they struggle to play bars and carnivals and I think Dave is the only original member.
You said it! And it's not like it was their fault. It was the record industry 110%. Every decade they wanted something new. By the early 80s, the Uriah Heeps, Foghats, and Molly Hatchets of the world went from stadiums to bars which they've been playing ever since. By the early 90s, even the big names like Poison and Mötley Crüe were suffering. By 2000, the record industry decided to kill off whatever was left of rock/metal and has been on a downward spiral ever since. Bands like Slipknot and Linkin Park are really lucky because they were the last 2 rock groups to benefit from the industry before they gave up. Because of this, they can be considered the last "rockstars". The industry has been shoving pop and rap down our throats for the last 15 years and nothing is substantial anymore. And the new rock groups that do play arenas (Five Finger Death Punch, Avenged Sevenfold, Shinedown), well, those arenas are located in rural/white trash parts of the country because the industry has confined the rock music market to those parts. For example, even when old groups like Mötley Crüe, Def Leppard, or Ozzy come around, they have to play the Allstate Arena, an arena located in Des Plaines (a white trash suburb just outside of Chicago and near me) because they aren't "refined enough" to play United Center, the arena in downtown Chicago which is reserved for the likes of Elton John, Rod Stewart, and Barry Manilow. Some bands are able to go between both (The Who, AC/DC, Van Halen), but mainly there's a dividing line between the Allstate Arena groups and the United Center groups...holy shit this was a long rant haha.
yeah... but in the end it's the consumer ( i hate that word in relation to music, but that's what we are looking at it from a bussiness point of view) who turned it's back to good music... and let them shove shit down their throats. The majority wants to be fooled and feeded with garbage.... so that's what they will get !!!! And they don't deserve anything better too !!!
That's true in a sense...mainly because our society are idiots for buying into it. When the record industry went from Pantera to Lil Wayne in the blink of an eye, people didn't have to buy into it, but they did because they felt they had to.
yeah... and i rather see such a great band as Molly Hatchet in a bar with 100 die-hard fans... as to find myself surrounded by 10.000 + morons at a stadium, who are just there, so they can brag about the fact they have seen Kiss or what ever great band... sad but true
Good point. Besides, whether they like it or not, Kiss's days are numbered. They've become a full blown act now (more than they were in the 70s) and don't care about the real fans at all. I predict that in the next 10 years they'll be playing carnivals here in the States unless they do another "farewell" haha. The entire reason Mötley Crüe is doing their big final tour thing is because they see themselves in that scenario 10 years from now if they keep touring. The whole classic rock revival thing can only last so long I guess.
yeah, if it's only about cashing- in on old succes... it won't last long... i love old bands like Focus, Golden Earring or Kayak.. which keep on creating good new music; they're still as relevant as back in the day... atleast in my opinion...
Those types of groups are the best. I know there were mixed opinions about Sabbath's last release, but I thought it was the best record with the Sabbath moniker since Mob Rules. Motörhead's last release (Aftershock) kicked ass. AC/DC's Rock or Bust was the record of 2014 in my book. Queensrÿche's debut with Todd LaTorre was their best since Empire hands down. The last Triptykon record was proof that Tom G Warrior's mind is still flowing with musical ideas. I could go on and on haha.
meaningless on
i love the Molly Hatchet stuff
