I would live to shoot with an old rifle like this one. So far I've only shot with guns that are used by Finnish Defence Forces.

a few years ago, i shot an old kar98k. it nearly broke my shoulder but it was fucking awesome!
ShieldbitersValhalla on
When I bought this yesterday, I held a Mauser, and it was so heavy! I can imagine how firing one is.
ShieldbitersValhalla on
There is actually a highly sought after Finnish variant of the Mosin rifle called the M39 I believe. Collectors like that one a lot.
ShieldbitersValhalla on
Thanks!
This is a pretty much standard variant from the Mosin Nagant series of rifles. There have been about 17 million made by the Soviet Union, and the legendary Soviet sniper Vasily Zaytsev had a confirmed 242 kills between October 1942 and January 1943, using a rifle like this one.

That needs a pretty good clean up
ShieldbitersValhalla on
Yep. I'm going to disassemble it, and submerge the steel parts with a type of paint thinner, which will help remove the cosmoline that you can see all over it. And I'm going to set the stock in the hot sun, so the cosmoline bleeds out of the wood over time. I suppose I will also refinish it sometime after that, and of course re oil all the steel afters it's cleaned, but I am not at that point yet.

i have not much of an idea about that era of weaponry... but it does look beautiful. are you planning to fire it eventually?
ShieldbitersValhalla on
Definitely. I have 20 rounds of non-corrosive 7.62x54R, and a small pack of corrosive armor piercing rounds. I just have to completely clean it out, and do my best to remove the cosmoline from the wood stock. It's really in there. Like inside the wood fibers. I'll have to strip, stain, and re-finish the stock. And I'm not a carpenter at all haha.
blackstar1965 on
I used to have one of those!

Thinking of pulling a Zaytsev on us all, were you?
haha...but in all seriousness, this is an excellent piece..do you think after cleaning, you will give it a mild re-finish? I'm not sure about the financial factors to this..but I'm guessing it takes some dedication for older rifles.
ShieldbitersValhalla on
If there is a rifle to mess up on, it's this one. Since it was only $120USD. I do want to re-finish it, but I'm going to have to consult a friend about it first.
SPILIOS-1986 on
so man, do you use guns to kill innocent animals?
the only choice for you is to "S.O.D. - Kill Your FUCKIN self"
hahahahahahahaha
ShieldbitersValhalla on
No. I only hunted once when I was a kid. This rifle would mostly be for unwieldy over-penetrating home defense LOL. Oh, and a fun gun for the range, hahaha.
Blüdrayne on
aah. the problem with using it for home defence isnt the calibre. its the length of the rifle and the reload. ideally you want a shorter rifle thats more compact and easy to swing around tight corners, and that is semi automatic. something like an m4 or ar15.
but yes, it is overpowered. it could actually pose a hazard due to excessive ricochet or wall penetration.
sorry. bit of a nerd sometimes.
ShieldbitersValhalla on
Yeah, that's why I was saying unwieldy and over-penetrating haha. I don't think I would actually go for this for home defense, I would probably go for a pump shotgun, or a semi automatic handgun. I will probably get a PM Makarov eventually. That's not to say I couldn't have a round chambered with this rifle if I get a heads up of a bogey in the premises.

Hail Shieldbrother
nice rifle, I got the same one.
but mine can´t shoot anymore
ShieldbitersValhalla on
Thanks. Is there a problem with the rifle? Or has it been deactivated? I know all weapons in the UK are deactivated, because of gun laws there, but I don't know about Germany's gun laws.
bayernpirat on
it´s deactivated, there´s no striker and two holes in the barrel.
In Germany we have the War Weapons Act and it´s forbidden to possess such weapons if it´s not deactivated.
ShieldbitersValhalla on
I did not know it was like that there.
doyle92 on
Great to see you've finally started cleaning it up!
Would love to see some more photos of it in action when it gets there :P
ShieldbitersValhalla on
Hopefully I will get the opportunity to fire it soon. I brought it to an indoor firing range yesterday, but the only ammunition I had for it would damage the range. So outdoor only, or brass cased rounds, which are hard to find.
bayernpirat on
any news from your rifle?
ShieldbitersValhalla on
Unfortunately not so far. I would have to fire it at an outdoor range, so it may be a long time before I have an opportunity to use it. But as soon as there is another gun show, I'll be buying a pistol, which I can fire at an indoor range.
