It was a birthday gift from one of my closest friends. He is learning carpenter.
The box is made from full wood planks, so it was quite expensive.

Why not burn images into the wood again?

The pictures are printed on a adhesive tape. My friend needed about 10 hours of work just for the box itself. Furthermore he isn't so artistic, that he can burn it into the wood with a soldering iron.

Fair enough. I think it's more important to honour your friend's work than it is to make it what you think it should look like.
You have a good friend to have someone put in effort for you this way.
