No support from me for a hippie-"black metal" band... Or whatever they ever are...
Hippie black metal band? Do you know how many black metal bands feature lyrical themes of nature? Many black metal bands sing about a return to a primitive lifestyle, a time when our modern civilization will collapse and nature will regain what is hers. WITTR are actually doing something proactive to work towards this goal, something I'm sure few black metal musician would oppose. Environmental conservation couldn't be more in line with black metal ideology.
I honestly cannot take seriously a band which tries to change the whole idea of black metal to something completely different.
A black metal band which declines the ideology and keeps just singing about forests and other nice stuff? Is it even black metal then? Musically, maybe yes, but ideologically it's not.
Black metal, at least for me it means war, satanism, hatred, antihumanism, anti-religion! It is much more than just music. Why won't they move to another music genre and spread their own ideologies through another ways if black metal isn't their thing?
Remember this is only my opinion about the band, if you like it it's alright for me, but no way I'm going to ever support this kind of band myself. I'm not going to start a fight with anyone just because I myself cannot stand the band.
How are they trying to change the whole idea of black metal? Much of black metal has been concerned with nature from the very beginning. Immortal is a band that no one would deny is as true a black metal band as any, but point out to me the satanic or anti-religious themes in their lyrics. There are none, their lyrics deal primarily with nature. Ulver, one of the first Norwegian black metal bands, have lyrics dealing with the beauty of nature and even fairy tales.
Not to mention the fact that WITTR have lyrics dealing with many of the negative themes you speak of. Look at the lyrics of the song from their Celestial Lineage album, "Subterranean Initiation". If the title isn't enough to evoke thoughts of Satanic rituals, look at the lyrics: "Steeds heads bowed await their rider. The air scented with smoke and blood. One thousand horns sound in eternal salute to the old gods of war their empire in ruins."
Here's another example from their song, "Vastness and Sorrow". "A dark and fell rider clad in garments of shadow is the lord of this place. A cruel and wanton king. A priest of a black religion is he." These lyrics are as dark and depressing as those of any black metal band. WITTR's lyrics deal with themes of nature, paganism, and the apocalypse, very similar to that of bands such as Enslaved and Immortal. Just because they don't deal primarily with the tired old themes of Satanism doesn't mean they are any less worthy of being deemed black metal, just as no argues that Enslaved or Immortal are any less black metal than, say, Dark Funeral or Marduk. On the contrary, those two bands have had more influence on the development of the scene than just about any other group.
WITTR aren't doing anything differently, they're just getting a lot of attention for their belief in environmental conservation. I don't care if you like the band or not, but get your facts straight. Even from the beginning, black metal hasn't been solely concerned with satanism or hatred. Satanism wasn't even instrumental in the early days of the genre. Varg Vikernes, when asked of the importance of Satanism to the genre, replied: "It's not a Satanic thing, it's a national heathen thing..."
I agree. The best thing about black metal to me is the fact that it can be both musically diverse and lyrically open to many subjects.
That's what attracts me to the genre and that is exactly why it is my favorite among all metal. I see more stand-out gems within black metal than any other metal sub-genre. I personally do not like this specific band (so I will not rate the shirt), but their ideologies is not my concern.
You mentioned Ulver, their first three albums are masterpieces to me that I will always carry within. Personally, I don't care what they sing about, as long as it's not in favor of religion in any way.
+1
You're right, there are many great black metal bands which do things different, but everyone can't agree with everything.
I remember listening a song from this band few years ago, I liked it musically but I didn't agree with their ideologies and that's why I don't support the band.
Black metal means different things for different people, I'm sure that it means something else for WITTR what it means to me. I'm ok with that, I don't really care what they do.
For those who like and support the band, keep supporting, I'm going to shut up for now and listen to the bands I want to support.
Not to keep the argument going, but it seems like you missed the entire point of my post. I was trying to explain that WITTR and similar bands aren't doing anything differently. The MAJORITY of black metal bands have themes of nature in their music. Burzum, Bathory, Emperor, Ulver, the list goes on and on. And its not even that WITTR's lyrics lack the dark themes you mentioned, I gave multiple examples. What is this ideology held by the band that you disagree with so much? Because I don't see it.
It is also ironic to see a few bands in your collection with VERY similar lyrical themes to that of WITTR. Nokturnal Mortum, Odal, and Hate Forest (and probably more) are all bands that focus primarily on nature, paganism, and folklore.
I wasn't really talking about the nature theme, like I said here, nature is of course important part of black metal. As you said, I actually listen to many bands dealing with nature themes.
Maybe I have to explain more specifically why don't I agree with the band's thoughts so we can put end to this argument.
I have read strange things about this band on a Finnish black metal message board, Werwolf of Satanic Warmaster had posted quotes from the band members on the board and they were saying something like that satanism and black metal generally has NOTHING to do with their visions. They said that themselves. They were also talking about some kind of life-worshipping things I'd expect to hear from a mouth of a definite hippie. I just can't agree to things like that myself and why, well, I don't think that is important to explain.
Hippies or not, I suggest that we stop this conversation here, maybe I have understood the band wrong. After all this site is about commenting other people's t-shirts, jackets, collections and stuff. Not arguing about ideologies and stuff, right? I don't really even care about the band, what they do or what do they think.
Black metal means different things for different people, and if this band is what black metal means for someone, it's ok. Having your own thoughts and opinions is also important part of black metal, isn't it?
Did Tico hack your account?
What the fuck man?
haha hes only saying that cause long ass post.
bahaha I know! I'm just giving him a hard time.
XD hahaha
to say black metal should have one single fixed ideology is truly one of the most idiotic statements ive ever seen and your definition of black metal being limited to only satanism, war, hatred, anti-humanism, and anti-religion(note the contradiction in having satanism and anti-religion in your list) makes you look and sound nothing more than a 15 year old fan boy.
Using your stance on black metal and lyrical themes applying to nature, here are the bands you cant take seriously:
-Emperor
-The aforementioned Immortal
-All Pagan Black Metal bands
-All Ambient Black Metal bands
-Darkthrone
-Mayhem
-Carpathian Forest
-Marduk
-many more whom i don't feel like mentioning
note: ive never listened to this band and i don't plan to
No I didn't say that nature isn't important theme in black metal, I just meant that the other lyrical themes should not be forgotten.
Maybe I said something wrong (probably because of my English skills), I didn't mean that black metal should be just about 1 ideology and 1 theme, it's good that black metal is a genre that is evolving but of course there will be bands with ideologies that are against my own ones, like I'm pretty sure many of us wouldn't tolerate NSBM (let's not confuse NSBM with this conversation though). I just stated in my first comment that I'm not going to support the band.
We all have our own opinions over things and there isn't much to do to change them. Someone likes this band, ok, it isn't just the right thing for me and I don't have anything to say here anymore.
